Street Photos from Charlottesville, VA

On Friday (9/26) – we went to Charlottesville, VA for the day. After rainy and damp weather all week, the sunny blue skies in this lovely mountain town were an extra treat.

First, here is the video I put together – the song is called “Songbird” by Forty Foot Echo:

Now – a Dozen Street Shots:

Street Portrait #3 – I was taking some doors photos – and when I saw this employee standing to the side of this large doorway, his coordinated yellow shirt called to me. The line of his shoulders works with the line in the doorway and his apron works with other rectangles. I also like the 3 little lights above him and the fold of the paper in his hands seems to work with the lines in other areas.

Street Portrait #4 -I like this shot for a few reasons and one has to do with roles. The silhouette art features a woman with a child in tow – and if you look to the center, we have a working woman with briefcase in tow. Love the contrast and both roles are great!

Street Portrait #5 – This dude was just way cool.

It was a little sad during our visit because there are signs everywhere for the missing college student Hanna Graham. For those that do not know about this story, Hannah went missing on 9-13 -14 –  she was out partying and decided to walk home alone.  She got lost on the way and was sending texts to her friends.  Video surveillance was able to help track the last person she was with (big Brother has perks) and there has been an arrest as well. We are all praying for her.

However, with all this media coverage about this case I wish someone would be sending a “wake-up” call message to viewers.  I know it may not be the best time because the focus is on finding Hannah and trying to get tips coming in…

But listen up, this is another example of how drinking impairs abilities and can leave us vulnerable.  This is likely another example of what is called a “crime of opportunity” and it is sad!   I have a few more thoughts to share about alcohol, but for now I just want to remind all of us to drink responsibly – or how about not at all and let the cells in your body get a healthy break.

But seriously – college kids and teens need to be reminded of the dangers of getting wasted.

And if you are using alcohol to cope with – well start thinking about other ways of tackling issues.  I know it is not easy and habits and patterns get set, but there are resources out there and it starts with becoming aware of how you are coping.  Alcohol in itself is not necessarily bad, but when you use it for coping it robs you of real growth and at some point you will have to sober up and deal with things.  Nobody ever said: “Yeah, I had a lot of problems and then I started drinking everyday and everything got better.

I am not trying to judge your alcohol consumption – I am just saying think about it! And monitor all you do with wisdom –  because you’ll know when things are not in balance – and wellness is rooted in awareness.

On Friday, I also met a few more folks – including the Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo.

Check out the free sample of CALM on the table.  I recently bought a huge bottle of CALM and it was on back order – which shows how much people love it.  I highly suggest everyone try this awesome product. There is a reason that it has won awards for the last 3 years -because it is a highly absorbable magnesium and most people in our culture have insufficient magnesium levels, which leads to all kinds of body imbalance. Try some…

  1. Lovely photos! You obviously know what you’re doing with them!

    I think I have low self-control with my words at times now, I don’t want to think about how I would be if I was a drinker. I saw how my brother was as a teen years ago, and figure I have the addiction gene, being related to him, and so I have decided to stay away and not risk developing another issue.

    1. Thanks Ryan – 🙂 and sounds like you have this area down! 🙂 – and for me – I partied pretty hardy in the late 80’s – nothing too crazy – but I also truly enjoy the taste of beer and grew up liking it – so for me… drinking was about “deliciousness” and not necessarily escapism – the delicious cold brew, tasty Irish coffee, or some delicious berry/peppery red zin…

      but even in my biggest party days I also liked to be in control (high conscientious personality) and ,imitating my drink was easy to do because I am a “lightweight” – you know, where my body does not like a lot of alcohol so I knew (learned) how to cut myself off and sip ice water.

      But whew, I had some friends (esp. Kelly) who did the beer-can funnels – shots of Jager – and I think it was a disadvantage that they could “handle” their liquor – because heavy-heavy partying can lead to much mess.

      🙂

  2. Very nice set. Loved the little bit with the harmonica? player.

    I really like Charlotteville, although I’ve never really taken shots there. Maybe when Maria comes … part of my family is originally from that area.

  3. Hi Yvette, I enjoyed this idea of street portraits. I’ve been thinking about doing something similar here, when I’m a bit more familiar with my camera! I agree with you about the alcohol message. I think most people, young and old, seriously overestimate how much their bodies can tolerate. I enjoy red wine but these days I am pretty strict about how much and when. Very sad for the family of Hannah

    1. I totally look forward to your street work. I really do – and don’t forget to also take lots of shots in “auto” mode so you can get some flow…

      and thanks for the alcohol feedback – it is such a sensitive topic – but I really wish that this case would raise awareness about it – as well as reminding these kids about the “buddy system” – safety in numbers!

      1. Yes, it is… I was pickpocketed in Lisbon after lunch with which I had had some wine. It wasn’t much, but it went straight to my head, and I’m convinced that I’d not have “lost” my money (it was just cash, luckily) if my mental processes had not been slowed down by the alcohol.

    1. Thanks Kan – and the girl with the flowers – well thanks for saying that because she really did match her bouquets. The photo may not have showed it that much – but in person – her rosy cheeks were an exact match to the roses – and the cream-white of her skin matched the others – and then her outfit matched too – I have never seen anything that in sync before – or was it the samples of pinot grigio and shrimp we had after we sampled the quac – ha! jk
      but I really liked your dance, dance, dance topic

  9. That was a fun walk! Like the barista pic very much, and also the flower girl – the bouquets – wow! I think I know these dumplings – they have them in China for breakfast with different fillings, and a little bit bigger.
    thanks for all your recent comments -am still swamped with emptying boxes and finding space for everything (it gets complicated when two people each have not one- but a few – hobbies, lol)

  10. Thanks for the stroll and the places and people! And about alcohol, it is strange that here in Greece that alcohol drinks are sold very easily, (even pure alcohol is sold without any prohibitions, but for pharmaceutical reasons) and wine is cheap, and problems are overflowing with the crisis, we don’t have as many cases. I guess it has to do with many reasons, (tradition, ethics, climate, etc) but in my opinion it mostly has to do with selling a product.

    1. Hi Vass! That’s very interesting to hear about pure alcohol – and I wa just thinking about you this week because pf is now on spotify – and one of the jams on a playlist I made made me think of el greco

  11. A very friendly town. Vibrant and full of smiles. I was sad too when I saw the picture of the missing girl. I hope they will find her and that she will be okay. A very scary reality for all of us that even if in a place we thought we are safe and familiar, bad elements are lurking around and we should always be vigilant. My thoughts and prayers for her and her family.

    1. I fully agree about it being a scary reality – and the latest news is that the guy they have in custody – well his DNA has just been matched to at least 2 other cases and maybe more – and I think someone once said that it is a few bad apples doing a majority of the crimes – and so to get this person off the streets is a good thing. thanks for dropping by island traveler!

  13. You met wonderful people during your walk! I hope Hannah will be found. Do you have any updates yet? I agree with the alcohol issue, wisely said Yvette!

    Like

    1. Hi Indah-Diver – 🙂
      I am not sure where you left off on the case – but the latest update I have is that they have the main suspect in custody – and it is believed that they had enough to arrest him earlier – but they let him go (for strategic reasons) and I guess arrested him a day+ later on a beach in Galveston, TX (I think) – and well – turns out his DNA is connected to a couple of other local cases.
      One of the old cases was from 2010 and it was a girl who left a Metallica concert and was not let back in – and well, she disappeared and her remains were found in a field – but had DNA evidence to be connected to this same guy. wow.
      ~~ Also,
      The school currently has a blue light security system in place, but they are also starting a new thing called “buddies on call” where people can call for a ride or escort – it is a few weeks away form being active.
      ~~~ And one more thing, I guess there have been 8 missing girls from this particular highway area in the last 5 years – so they are really teaming up to crack down on things.
      If anything major unfolds I will post about it –
      peace to you!
      1. Hi Yvette, thank you so much for the updates! Good to hear that the main suspect is now on custody and the school takes this issue seriously. I hope there will no more victims!
      And here is some info (natural vitality website HERE)
      “Magnesium deficiency is more common than most people think. It can be caused by a number of stresses on the body, including—but not limited to— having sugar in the diet, lack of adequate dietary magnesium from foods grown in depleted soils, emotional stress, some drugs (diuretics, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, insulin, cortisone), exercise or work drains, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, hidden yeast infections, microbes, and too much calcium in the diet, which is typical of the typical modern diet.”
      A list of symptoms of magnesium deficit from the website:
      Millions suffer daily from symptoms that can result from a lack of magnesium. Due to the fact that magnesium is so vital to so many bodily processes, deficiency can contribute to a wide variety of conditions, such as:
