Day 5 B &W (art and E Knight)

For Day 5 of my B & W challenge, I bring you to you a local Art Center.

Last night we went to the art reception there and I was not thinking of taking photos – really!  But it all started when I saw this guy sitting on a bench.  Walking by – I peeked in and saw this:

Here is a slightly different version to show you this room in color (notice you cannot see his pen in this second shot).

We were not at the art reception very long – just long enough to get some art into my soul and to take about a dozen+ photos.

On the way out we had the chance to speak to one of the artists (Emma Knight – see below).   I did get some video footage, but not sure if it is usable.

I had the chance to chat it up with Emma for a few minutes right as we were leaving.  I like the feel of her work. She has just returned to RVA after living in Georgia for twenty years.  From her website here: “Knight’s landscapes are abstracted, yet the scenes are full of inferred space and very recognizable. She paints using the “indirect method” a slow process, which involves building many layers of paint. “

The top painting was my second favorite (of the night), which I was told was inspired by a fish eye lens photo her son took of the James River. I like the movement and the light. It was priced at over 3,000. The painting on the left is a walking bridge over the James River and just seeing that painting brings back many memories of walking to Belle Isle with the kids. The painting on the right, the tongue tree, was inspired by a photo taken at Maymont Gardens.

  1. Great black and white shot of the writing man… He looks very pensive…
    Also, the gondola painting is indeed fantastic… I suppose if I had some extra disposable money, I’d buy it especially to hand down to future generations! Art is a great family heirloom!
    Looks like a lovely show with many talented artists! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Yes, art truly can be an heirloom – but funny how not everybody wants certain art pieces – even if worth money! – I have seen a few times that inherited pieces were sold off because the recipient could care less (or wanted the moola)
      Oh, and there is a fun scene in Better Call Saul where this old lady has hired Jimmy (soon to be Saul?) – to make a will for her expensive figurines that she wants to pass on – it is eel done and one of the things to pass on is a Hummel figuring – and it reminded me of when we offered a couple of Hummels and passed on them – because we would rather have them go to someone who really values those figurines (we did not) ha!

    1. sounds good – and I know a lot of people do not “buy” music with so much available on streaming (like Spotify) but it looks like your project is worth buying – and so I hope I helped give you even a small bump with the mention – but it really is unique music that enriches a music library –

  3. I like your pictures, esp the B&W, it really tells a story! To answer one of your questions, if I had 13,000 as spare change, then yes, I probably would, but until that day, I’ll have to go to Ikea! 😉

I agree – and if you do not find what you are looking for at Ikea – another idea is to buy more affordable pieces from artists and just start building a collection with hundred dollar pieces – some collectors start this way and end up with treasures on their hands later- while you support the local industry. And just one thing I have heard and learned personally – and I am sure you know this already – but only buy an art piece that really speaks to you – or it does not matter how cheap or expensive it is – so that is a rule I try to follow – 🙂 ❤

  4. What a delightful visit to the gallery Y ! I have to say the paintings by Emma Knight were my favorite. I love the colors and dimensions she has used. Really enjoyed going through all the photos you took, not to forget the Gifs you made, Great job !!

    1. thanks so much Zee – and I actually remember a time when you used a lot of gifs in your posts – and glad they worked for this post – and the real reason I used them was because my snap and go photos were a bit sub par (grainy) and I thought it would make it more fun and was a nice way to use them….

    2. Hey aletta – I know that you did not officially tag me, but when you asked me if I would be interested in the 5 day challenge before I went to FL, well I wish I would have said yes, and then just did it when I returned – (so thanks for thinking of me)

      then when I got back – there was an invite there from J & J – and so I was grateful – because it is a cool challenge (IMO)- I have LOVED seeing how different bloggers participate – not joust “what” they post -(like Sylvia brought us to Italy for five days ❤ – here) but how they do it -(and Indah combined hers with story telling- here)….
      and then yours was cool (here) because it had such variety – looking up at the church, a bit of art – and ending with the sea…. 🙂 ❤

    1. Hi there- well no photo shop with any of these – :0 – but I did practice with “color splash studio” which is much easier to use than PS – and is really cool. and thanks for the feedback ❤ ❤

  10. I love the black and white version of the fellow on the bench and like it better than the color versions because I think BW sets the mood. I also love the shot of the room with different moods on either side of the divider. And so much lovely artwork!

  12. Looks a great exhibition. I love your first photo, the b&w one.
    Not sure of my favourite – I’m reading on my phone as I’m out and about – but I do like the fisheye one
    I think I would pay it if I really adored it and had the right place to display it.

    1. thanks Deb = I think for me that is what it all comes down – “the right place to display it” (and loving it) – and I have too many paintings/photos sitting in storage (none worth those amounts, but gems to me…)

      and, NO – I did not – for three reasons –

      well both of those prices (13,000 and 3,000) are NOT in my art price range – and might not ever be –
      2nd – I don’t like the piece in the way to hang in my house – I said it was my second fav of the show – which is true, but we only pick favs because it is more interactive if we hunt and then reveal our favorites.

      and lastly, I was not there to shop – esp, cos I already bought a piece of art for this month- I actually bought three pieces in Florida – I gave one of them away on the plane (a wire art piece that was unique and nicely priced – actually bought to give to someone) and the 2nd thing was a painting I left there for my mom to bring to me this summer, and then the third piece is a personal all time favorite, which I bought unexpectedly in YBOR city in FL-
      I am going to post about it soon, but here is a picture of it in case you do not see that post:

    1. thanks timeless lady – and I liked that one too – I think the artist made two more – but I did not make it over to that side – have to be careful at this center because there is SO much art one can easily become overwhelmed – it is really huge and there is tons of art – whew….

  16. I love how you incorporated gifs here. It’s like you made the art come alive. Also love the photo where it shows two different moods on the left and right…that guy on the right looks overly zealous like he just made a sale 😀

    1. thanks for the feedback M 🙂 – and you are so right = he is zealous indeed – I wanted to catch them talking, but did not notice that until I got home – and maybe it was all that art he was talking about – lol

      1. His eyes look like they are bulging out of his head (and that is some awkward weird arm position), and he sort of reminds me of a mad scientist or a crazy artist. It looks like he’s showing off some vintage bottles. Good capture, good timing 😀

        It also seems that you like the take several photos of the same scene, up close and far away. Just like me. One shot is never enough!

        2. Lol. That is a funny joke and you’re great at making these gifs and comics. Now, in this picture, it looks like the bar attendant is sort of trying to entice the visitor to drink his cheap wine 😉

        5. Very interesting to read. Someone’s not paying attention to what they’re leaving in the wine as they are making it. I’m not a wine drinker, but this doesn’t sound good at all.

        6. well someone just emerald me an update from isa news today – suggesting it may not be as bad as the first news report said – hm – and well, I think it is because it has inorganic arsenic – which accumulates and leads to all kind sod problems from cancer to interfering with metabolism and brain function….

          I guess 83 wines (Sutter Home, Beringer, Fetzer, Franzia and Trader Joe’s Charles Shaw White Zin, aka Two-Buck Chuck- ) are accused of containing “arsenic levels 10 parts per billion above the range considered safe for drinking water.”

        and sometimes I do take two or three shots – but not always – and in this case I was snapping kind of fast and so two here, three there and then done – not sure if any came out, but can really only spend so much time documenting – wanted to just enjoy the night without being in that mode – which I am sure you know – have to just “be” at times… and it was win-win – I was able to relax and still grab a few share shots….

        1. oh cool – and maybe it is just because you paint things I like and I love your use of value, but I think yours are good enough to sell – and they are better than some of the ones I see at some art shows. But it is so subjective – and I know some people have such a personal attachment to some of their pieces whereas others paint to make a sale.

        3. well you are also a realist – and humble – and as a beginner your perspective of your own will be all over the place – and so I hope you always keep a good balances – even tho I am sure you will – but some don’t – in fact, when we were leaving the local art show on Friday night, my husband even commented on how the artist we chatted with, Emma Knight, was way cool and personable – and then he said how he hated the snobby ones – and some do get so stinky cocky – argh! the art world as I am sure you know – it can get so stuffy.

  23. I love EVERYTHING in your B and W challenge. I think my absolute favorite is the little girl with her mama, and that purple box that clearly delights her. I bet they were so much fun to sit next to! =)

    I could go on and on and on…but then I wouldn’t get any writing done, at all! So, instead, I’ll just need to come by more often! =D

    1. Well thanks for saying that – and you are good to get back to your writing because there are good things going on in the writing world of Shan…. so keep those boundaries –
      and it was non eventful sitting next to them – I had my entire row to myself – nobody really talked – and it was this quiet, smooth straight thru flight – – oh and besides organic chips as snacks, Jet blue also offers free TV and I watched the news and then Joyce Meyer giving one of her edifying 20 minute talks – and think this one was on stopping “stinking thinking” and being mindful of ominous feelings that can really pull from perspective… anyhow, thanks for the visit and feedback ❤

      1. There ARE good things (maybe even great ones!) going on in the writing world of Shan! I’m still pulling things together for April while trying to finish up what got pushed aside for vacation, sickness, and laptop issues, but I’m a lot closer than I was even a couple of days ago, and I feel life starting to breathe into the plans – always a magical time, for me!

        We had four flights for our New York to Oregon and back again trip. On the Portland to Chicago flight, just after I learned Leonard Nimoy had died, we had TV – not free, but reasonable, so the kids watched Big Hero 6, and I got all nostalgic and watched Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons, which were both childhood favorites. It was sweet.

        “Stinking thinking” – I like that term! I used to do a lot more of that than I do today, and I can see, looking back, that it really got in the way of living a joyful and fulfilled life!

        Hop to visit with you again soon, but, if I don’t, it’s just because the words an worlds swallowed me up whole…. =)

        1. thanks Shan – and the sad thing about Nimoy’s passing was that everyone was jumping on Shatner for missing the funeral – and I am not sure of the details and have no opinion – but seemed a little hyped with misplaced focus on honoring Nimoy –
          anyhow, looking forward to when the “word world” expectorates you back out – ha!

  24. Hi there Yvette. I’m lurking around in the blogosphere after a while, so I have a lot of catching up to do. So happy to see you’ve done the B&W photo challenge! I really enjoyed your B&W image. With all the highlights and shadows and shapes, IMHO the monochrome works better than the colour. There have been a lot of art exhibitions of late in HK too. I kinda like the one you went to, more. It art seems more “normal” than the whacky stuff that seems to be so popular here.It’s such a personal choice though!

  26. Great post! I love your first two photos of the same scene in color and B&W, I’ve done some of that just to really SEE how the same subjects projects in the different modes. What fun at the show! Thank you for sharing. My folks live south of the James, and Dad is an artist. I would never pay that much for a painting because my home is already filled with art 😉

    I went back tonight looking for the photos of the glads you mentioned this AM. How did you send them? Or am I confused…. ? Hope your day was stellar! Cheers! WG

Thanks for your feedback WG – and I heard there are is a great artist group “south of the james” and I think we saw some of their work at a festival – I wonder if your dada has ever been a part of that group. and I bet your house has lots of art – and of course flower art outside. I will check on the pics./…

      1. Good morning! Dad exhibits sometimes with a group which runs a gallery in Colonial Heights, and belongs to a group of Richmond area artists. He isn’t able to participate as much as he’d like as he no longer drives- but changes out paintings and attends functions when one of us can take him. He enjoys his painting enormously and stays active with his sales. Yes, lots of art, lots of flowers, and the inside remains something of a makeshift greenhouse until the weather breaks 😉 We have a very active arts community here in Williamsburg. There is usually an interesting show in place at the Williamsburg area library, and there are numerous galleries. A great weekend trip!

        2. weskit? Yes, we made this our prime weekend destination when I was still teaching in Tidewater. It kept me sane through those last few years! This is a very hospitable destination for with so much to enjoy! There are Sunday afternoon shows around DoGstreet, the Saturday morning market, An Occasion in October- all free and out of doors, in addition to the museums and galleries. Many of my neighbors are working artists. And it is all starting up for a new year 😉 Best wishes, WG

Love what you’ve done here with your photos, the first one really captures me with the guy sitting there like that, lost in his reading, and then the way you changed the colours around in the three different versions. And your ‘gifs’ are so creative. You are so clever Y! Jimmy cooks, Jimmy swings…so very cool!!!! The ‘different moods’ too, fabulous contrast. Emma Knight’s paintings are the kind I love and I agree with you, definitely the top one from the ‘fish eye’ lens photo her son took.     I like these lines: “Knight’s landscapes are abstracted, yet the scenes are full of inferred space and very recognizable. She paints using the “indirect method” a slow process, which involves building many layers of paint.”

    The inferred space (the implicitness) always excites me. It shows without showing, and what’s thrilling is there can’t be a lone conclusion to what the story has to convey. “It’s subject to interpretation” gives us “our” story conflict.
