Thursday Nocturnal and 13 leftover doors from summer

Thursday Special has the theme of Nocturnal this week (here)- and here is my official entry. A metal art hummingbird keeping watch at night. Can you see the Rose of Sharon bloom in lower right?

Also, because it time for some Thursday Doors, let’s start with a nocturnal door:

1. Backlit doorway. I left the green light in (upper right) because of an old post  – and I also thought it added a nice replacement for a moon or street light. I also like the street lines here….

Now, it is time to share some leftover doors from Summer 2016.

Here is a gallery of the doors I am featuring this week (I have also added the photos below just in case you cannot see the slide show):

2. This door reminded us of a cold, psycho ward – ha! Can you feel it?

3. This entrance way seemed to have an identity issue! The arch above does not match the door below and everything here felt disjointed – Even the lines are off – and so is the sidewalk…

4. Inspirational words: this down door opened to this up wall. The leadership here is making a statement with this….

5. Keep out sign also makes a statement. And the overgrown grass and trash says something too.

5 B – This shiny new Jaguar drove by right as I was grabbing the photo – and it was a nice juxtaposition – the impeccable car and rundown building.

These shiny mirrors on the large wooden doors were found in early summer.

6. These are doors we walk through a handful of times every year. They are doors at a restaurant we love. Richmond is known for the bricks (and regular readers have heard me say this many times) – and these bricks are quite  old – maybe going back to early 1900s. Bricks are also inside – can you see them through the left door? This is my favorite door of the year so far! 😉

7. More Richmond, VA brick – and part of this building has bricks from the 1800s.

8. This old entrance way features a newer business – the Segway tours in RVA

9. Looking out through the doors at The Tobacco Company. One day in July, we were shopping and we met a guy – he looked like a young Charles Barkley (will share a photo later) and so we started talking and he said, “yes, people tell him that a lot”, and he invited us to come check out the place he worked – which was The Tabacco Company restaurant..  So we did – and he came out of the kitchen and everything. It was fun and food was excellent.

10. A work door — – and more bricks!

11. Yup, more bricks here too  – and I also like the railings and the tough vibe of this industry back door. Feels all strong and gritty – 🙂

12. I took this door photo to text to some teens – because last April two teens (Eric Hinton and Dylan Ballard) died in a car accident and Dylan had the #28 when he played football and all summer long the memorabilia often had the #28. So this door is dedicated to Dylan and Eric.

13. Now I bring you to Northern Virginia – where the doors on this office building are hidden by some small Crepe Myrtle (and just like I mention the bricks in RVA, I sometimes talk of the wonderful Crepe Myrtle – one of my favorite trees). And how do you like this “O” for the front of the building – pretty cool?

14. In this last door, From Fredericksburg, VA – the orange caught my eye (and more old brick!) Orange door looked like a sliding door, but it is half of a double door, the other one is open – so inviting…

Hope you have nice day.

Is there a door here that you like the most?

Or do you find it silly to look at photos of mere doors?

I know it is not everyone’s cup of tea…but sometimes a door photo can grab a mood or capture a vibe of the current culture – and I guess that is why I like taking pictures of doors.

Go to Norm’s blog to see more doors – here

  1. I love that humming bird!

And I also like your psycho ward – actually, I liked the light of that black and whit shot and found it rather welcoming. But maybe that says something about my mental state!!

    1. ha! well thanks Debbie – and we do have changing mental states don’t we – and maybe a little quiet for you after traveling…. 🙂 xoxo

    1. Hey Andy! I know – and I was surprised by that car because I had no idea Jaguars were that luxurious again – in the early to mid 2000s they had this body style that seemed like maybe the designers acidemtalky merged the Ford Fusion blueprints with the Jaguar – and we just saw a 2003 bag for sale for a couple grand (near the yellow Beetle) and it was junk! So when this car came driving up – I actually thought it was going to be a BMW – but it was a jaguar !
And side bite on the investment – I think many folks “lease” these pricey rides these days – and so for a minimum amount they rent –
But I prefer used – for price – for lower insurance – and also peace of mind – like not worried if it gets scratched or dinged 😊☀️ Ya know ?

      1. Ya, I absolutely know what you mean 🙂 I’d never be able to even afford a finance or lease on these though! geez, especially not up here in Canada these days 😀

        1. Yes – I am not sure Canada prices – but during the football game the other night (go Broncos) they had the usual cat commercials and the sub for BMW (X1) was starting a lease at 269 a month – that sounded crazy low – and another one ( a car) was 500 – but I wonder if that is not always what most can get when they walk in….
Either way – I prefer older – ha!

  2. I love the design of the “O” building! All the other pictures are wonderfully uplifting (apart from the sad story of Dylan and Eric – may they rest in peace) xxxx

    1. Well I know you hand select your photos as you travel – and bad fish – I think of when you said some of us take door photos in context – sometimes I think of that when I grab a context shot!

      1. Hmmm. You know, I don’t actually “select” my shots when traveling. I see a shot and know it’s a shot, and snap that thing is all! Many, many of those things are doors. And windows. And mountains.

        1. Mm – we almost had California rolls (with a avocado) but we went with tuna – and the photo I have is just a picture of a stacked avocados –

  3. Oooo Yvette, I love crape myrtle trees, too. Your doors are fabulous. I just love all the brick on the east coast. We don’t have too much of that here it the west in earthquake country. The bricks and the trees are two of the things I enjoy the most when I travel east. Have a great weekend. 🙂

    1. Thanks for your nice comment – 😉 and I like the redwoods and other trees when I visit west – and as much as I am east coast all the way – feel like the Pacific Ocean has better beach life and vibe – all the way! 💙

  4. I enjoyed the doors…a favorite??? I like the Tobacco Company door, and since I am from the Philly area, liked the thought of a Charles Barkley double. I also thought the hummingbird was a good challenge entry for nocturnal, and yes, I can make out the Rose of Sharon. Enjoyed your post! 🙂

  5. I often think I should do this door thing. I love how you share the ordinary as well as the ornate and unusual, reflecting your environment. Doors are the entry point into mini worlds. Doors close us inside and can keep others out. Doors are security. I don’t think it silly to look at photos of doors! No doubt, I will feel silly taking photos of them though. 🙂

    1. I like how you. Wrote about doors! Very rich comment – and C- you really have to try and grab a few door photos – and then decide if it is for you! Maybe challenge yourself to take 4 or 5 – just to see?

And what I like about Norm’s round up (#thursdaydoors) is how each person brings their flair to a door post. We sometimes get history (ok – a lot) – and sometimes quirky – glitzy- or moody patina – -anyhow – thanks for the comment and again – you really should snap a few door pics and then assess again….

      1. When I’ve thought about doing it, I’ve had the yen to do a historical posting, but seeing your more everyday doors made me see there is a need for them, too. It shows us the sameness of our worlds. I will give it a go. I might begin at one end of town and work my way home. 🙂 LOL Thank you for your encouragement, Y.!
