Fall Photos (blog challenge catch up and don’t be crabby)

Hello Blog Readers, for today’s post I am sharing some of my favorite fall 2016 photographs.  I was inspired to do this while catching up on some blog visits this weekend –  as I perused some posts, I felt like it was time to connect with some challenges – and so moving from Sunday Splash and Sunday Trees, I also included some leaves, seeds, and a bit of fall orange reprieve:

6. This candy corn costume was so much fun so I had to grab a photo – and it was right after Lisa Kennedy shared that candy corn was the number one Halloween candy (when we all thought chocolate would have been number one). Linked to De Monte Y Mar’s Texture #46.
meaty
7. This photo is not linked to any challenge, but these MEATY and delicious squash seeds are always a tasty fall treat.

8. Favorite fall coffee this year was this all natural pumpkin spice coffee from Wa-Wa (filled my cup right on up and added a dash of real creme).

9. Tried my first “Honey Crisp” apple this fall (far right), which were being sold at a rest area on the way from Buffalo to Rochester.  I guess Honey Crisp is a new cultivated variety from the University of Minnesota Agricultural Research Center.  I liked them ok, but the folks with me REALLY love these crunchy and sweet apples.

11. We had a fatigued Hard Drive on our computer this fall -and this is what the worn out HD looked like inside (note the orange reflection from the blinds – fits right in, eh?). I am still amazed by technology….zeros and ones….hows does it all do this???  Linked to JNW’s one word: DIGITAL

signs
13. This “don’t be crabby” sign (linked to CEE’s B & W challenge signs)  comes with a little reminder to keep our moods up a bit. Crabby times will come, but let’s bring them into check and find a way to not be crabby to those around us – especially because so many of us set the tone for our homes and workplaces.  Let’s try to bring a splash of joy to folks when we can. Let’s be intentional to do so….  We are not perfect, but we CAN work at being kind. (and see Daily Musings’ ‘be kind’ sign here) While I was in Buffalo, NY recently, I had some time with my older sister and I recalled back to the 80’s when she shared how she “was working at being nice” to people. I still remember that – and at the time – as a young girl – I did not process it too much – but later I realized the wisdom she had with her self-awareness and social side. She knew the value of controlling the way she treated people and she knew she could alter things. And feelings do follow behavior you know…. For some folks, being kind comes easy, but for others, it is not the default. For example, many folks have heard of the Positive Psychology movement with Martin Seligman. And Seligman once wrote about his wake up call to change his crabby ways. He was gardening with his five year old daughter and she called him a grouch (here) and this was a catalyst for examining his pessimistic default ways. Now you might need to get more sleep, eat more protein, laugh a little more, take up a hobby for a few hours each week, or resolve a few annoying things – but find ways to lighten up and be intentional to find some joy – shake off the crabbiness that tries to sneak in – it will not only help those around you – but it will be better for you – kindness brings life to your bones. It will fuel you and help your immunity too.

My closing thought to leave with you is “don’t be a crab” and as my yoga teacher Alec said this week – let’s change the world one smile at a time.

One- smile- at – a – time. 🙂

be-lovely

Have a nice rest of your Sunday and be back later this week with a November Walk with Restless Jo….

    1. well hopefully they were all in synchronicity….
and it really all started with your sunday trees – my first image was more leaves, and the second one had the roots – and so I had to combine….
and buy the way – congrats again on 5 years of Sunday Trees.

  1. Awesome post Y – as usual I am floored by the diverse range of topics and challenges that you managed to sweep into one post – bravo! I loved the tree and the leaves. I have to learn how to do the single color highlight (the first photo) some special software? I love crunchy apples! I am very interested and curious about this liking and diverse dishes with pumpkins. Over here vegetables form the core of our diet but pumpkins are generally looked down upon. It’s called ‘kaddu’ (among other names) over here and the way it is said speaks volumes 😉 I quite like them but I cannot imagine pumpkin spiced coffee! Is it raw or cooked? I wonder if pumpkins taste differently over there? Even I find the concept of 0 and 1 doing everything for us unimaginable – and those nails – whewww 😀

    1. Hi dawd! Thanks for the nice comment – and the coffee is not raw – it is just spice and flavoring that is added to regular coffee – which they said was all natural.
      And kaddu, huh….?
I bet pumpkin tastes the same here even though I think few eat pumpkin like squash – so many folks here sugar in the States everything up – “ose” is added to everything, which actually is not as bad as the liver scarring high fructose corn syrup (very bad news) now being added – and not to be alarmist, but it is sad to see folks (especially those with chronic illness) NOT make the connection with sugar intake and Ill health ( sugar suppresses immunity and At the very least it is a minus food)
Ok enough of that – ha!
And “color splash studio” is one option and PIXR online can allow for color select too 😉

      1. So pumpkin is a ‘sweet’ dish? We make interesting ( even sweet and sour) dishes to go with the main course. In fact it is on today’s menu 😉 Thanks for the photo tip 🙂 have good weekend

  2. A lovely autumnal post – I like the look of those squash seeds. And a coffee to go with it. Sounds very tasty but I’m unlikely to find it over here.
And as for those nails – I just couldn’t cope with them myself. I’d probably cause serious injury to the people around me.
Thanks for joining in One Word Sunday Yvette

    1. Oh well I look forward to seeing the parts – and wow – reassembling them? He must be tech savvy. And side note – glad the newer computers have flash and I guess as we progress we have less moving parts….

    1) candy corn … I don’t get it. Everyone knows the world revolves around chocolate 😉
    2) pumpkin spice … no thanks.
    3) Honey Crisp apples … MY FAVOURITE!!!

    1. Joanne – I know, I know – how could it not be chocolate – !
and I had never had the honey crisp apples before and looks like you know them well – but three cheers for anyone who cultivated a variety for crunchy – because isn’t it lame to eat a mushy apple (like macintosh usually are…)

  5. Crabby! Me???? Never!!! 🙂 Well, only if it’s cold and wet and I’m trapped indoors. And then I just put the boots on and go jump in the puddles. Never tasted pumpkin seeds, Yvette, but I do like those black and white photos with a splash of colour. Someone told me how to do it once but Ive long since forgotten. 😦

    1. Hi Jo, well I think Pixr – and maybe even Google – has a filter for the color select.
I use this program where you drop in the image and it turns it to black and white and then you move around this circle on the areas you want to add color into. The tricky part is getting edges to line up, but it is pretty easy that way. Not sure what the pros use….

and pumpkin seeds are meaty-nutty and addicting. Lightly salted before baking them helps – so they have a crunch and then little chewy center – and I heard they are packed with nutrients…. esp good for men…

      1. I think it probably comes as standard on Windows 10, Yvette. I’m just too dumb to have thought of turning the photo black and white first. Thanks for the pumpkin seeds nudge 🙂 🙂

    1. my pleasure and I like your seasons theme Jesh….
and WaWa is actually a gas station – I think from Pennsylvania and they have tons of stores in NJ, and well, we long awaited for them to come to our area.
Life almost feels so much better here having Trader Joes, WaWa and now Wegmans….

      1. Was actually wondering how you got through the elections (since one time you mentioned that you shook O.’s hand) . Since am still a Dutch citizen I couldn’t vote, have been following it, but still see it as “an outsider.”

        1. we got through find and I don’t want to go there too much, but I have a feeling that Trump will get the best people for the job – and we might even end up better off because they are relying on the expertise of others as opposed to thinking that thirty years in the area has qualified them. I also had hope when I heard he was going to modify the repeal – because as much as i HATE Obamacare and wish we had a system similar to Canada’s health care system – I believe a change cannot be drastic – but it disgusts me that the health care system is a FOR PROFIT business that keeps people managing symptoms with drugs while avoiding many cures.
anyhow, I have hope also because there are checks and balances in place and even with presidential powers, there is only so much that can be done in many directions. I never met O, but have met many other politicians and I try to pray for all of them – I think we forget that they do not go into this for the money – and while some fame and power ensues, these are public offices that serve our country and as you so well know, the little prayers for them can make a difference.

thanks for your comment and be back to visit later, curious to see what you are painting these days….

        2. You’re one of the people where I know I’ll get an honest answer. I don’t know anything about the Canadian healthcare (since I never would live there, I hate cold long winters).
It’s sad when MD’s are not giving the best advice and care, for fear they would go broke themselves.
Since living here in this area, they told me that people take jobs a 15 year old could do, like sweeping up leaves, just to make ends meet. So am praying this will be turning of the tides for these, and also for the Vets.
You may not know, I added a page in late spring about my paintings with a different url
