Thursday Doors (and The Profit in Cuba, bread, and NZ)

This week’s episode of The Profit brought us to Cuba – and while the entire episode really makes one appreciate what we have here in the U.S. (in spite of the gripes – things are pretty great my friends – they are…not perfect – but we have so much to be thankful for….)

And from the The Profit’s Cuba episode, I was most inspired by the brother and sister team who started their own bakery.  Below is a shot of them, with Lemonis, as they enter the Bakery Shop – and look at those purdy TEAL DOORS…

I was also inspired by the soap makers  – who used a single crock pot to melt down soap and create customized soaps. If you have not watched the episode, you can see snippets of it HERE.

Look at that coffee on the right – love the mug and that foam/froth. mmmm
bread
Having time with my sister – down time to shop and enjoy some bread – that is reason to smile -and this is linked to T’s weekly smile #46 here.

Speaking of Cuba, my sister and I tried some Cuban bread from BJ’s in Rochester, NY earlier this month.  Two loaves were $1.99. Their Cuban bread was light and very airy – not as dense or as crunchy crusted as a French baguette – and so not my fav, but still good.  I dipped some of it in Thai rice noodle soup and it was great with the broth.

Side note on bread (and maybe donuts and sweets too) I hardly ever have toast or sweet treats anymore at all – for a while I could NOT because I was doing so much intestinal cleansing and bread and sweets were a major no-no.

However, I did make this cake in October – and it was nice to be able to have sweets if I wanted some:

I have adjusted quite well to new eating habits (very well) and usually I will have nutritious protein bars if I ever need a treat.  Aldi’s has a some great almond and chocolate protein bars but actually – (UPDATE 2018 – the protein bars are way too sugar-laden)

And speaking of protein, I recently tried this “Only Protein” brand of vanilla whey – and it was “WAY” too sweet (easy does it on the Stevia guys – yuck)… And well, after reading Jill’s post about how some folks have “a Utopian view of New Zealand”  – I read the snippet on the side label — about how  “New Zealand is synonymous with clean and green”- and you see – this is an example of why so many of us view NZ this way – the marketing here paints that “quaint” picture of the utopian NZ.  Come on Jill, are you sure you are not living in bliss?  Surely the grass is greener… or cleaner… or packed with more selenium…. or…. or….

  1. Ha : that’s how we’re marketed all over the world … sigh … We do have lots of fresh air, and green pastures, and lots of space … and lots of problems with pollution and all the social problems I listed in my post — and just like you’ve said about the USA lots to be thankful for.
Interestingly, I don’t like that ultra sweet taste of stevia, at all! Thanks for linking to my post, Yvette 🙂 Interesting times ahead!

    1. and oh my gosh – I forgot about the NZ beef marketing too – maybe I should start taking photos of the restaurants that hype up and advertise their NZ grass fed beef…. even though I am sure you already know that is here.
and I will be back by later to leave a comment, but your post gave much to ponder….
      peace out

      1. It’s true that our beef and our sheep are fed on grass and spend their days outside in paddocks (fields), and I think this makes the meat especially delicious, and is kinder on the animals. But there’s big controversies (or were before the huge earthquake this week, that’s been dominating the news and most people’s thinking in central NZ) about some farmers allowing livestock to wander freely on the riverbanks on their properties and into the waterways themselves, thereby contaminating the water supply.

        1. Well maybe those rumors (about the tainted water and grazing habits) were started by those “fake” news sites that Google just banned from using Adsense and facebook is limiting the traffic they can get (something like that) but I guess those sites use fake and sensational stories to get hits – and it makes me wonder if they would start that kind of rumor – like “wow – it in. NZ”
Oh and sorry to hear about the quake – been following it a bit….

    1. well thanks Judy!
it really flowed on its own – I had the little plastic man as my feature photo (isn’t he cute with the do not enter) and then when I saw those teal doors on the profit – well – it all flowed from there…
thanks for your visit and Happy Thursday

  3. I can understand how one feels if she/he needs to change diet such as no sweet (or low sweet), no fat/oil, no coffee, no spicy food etc. It can be quite hard thing to do at least for good while in the beginning. Hmm, I have not hear of Puerto Rican bread. That sounds very good.

    1. The bread was “ok” and better with broth – but not something I would get again.
And the dietary intake here in the States is way too high with sugar – and with a fungus connection to cancer (which sugar feeds the dangerous fungal forms) well it is one of the things all people with “healing” should get off of – and for me herbs were key.
But! I actually recommend lots of fats and oils – but the good ones – like butter and EVOO and then the spices can be health giving too – and whew – thankfully I have can enjoy coffee. I have given it up before – many years ago and for a bit – but I like it and my body seems to do well.
And that is also what I think food choices SHOULD come down to – what works for your body – which changes as one heals.
Not to ramble – but since 2014 this is what I am very passionate about.
And the key study that suggested “fat free” was good
Was a study done on certain indigenous people of a certain area and the results do not generalize to all (and actually do not result to most people because we need lots of good fats – to carry nutrients and feed our Brain) and most folks get too much omega 6 when we need way more omega 3. I always minimized this and even once knew a lady who had omega 3 in her email that is how much she believed in the need for more….
Anyhow – I think “marks daily apple” blog has excellent info about great fats and how it feeds us- and satisfies –
And while some folks might defend their “sugar” I will not shut up about the fact that it is is a “minus” food and it always costs us when we consume – we have to process it and so anyone healing – use herbs and fats to get off it….
Thanks for your comment my friend

      1. Thank you for the great information.. I completely agreed with these too. I think sugar is the most addictive substance 🙂 Oh, I can add coffee in there too.
What I had in mind early on was about for some people with pre-existing conditions. Some of these normal healthy foods are not recommended or advised by doctor to avoid.

        1. You are so right YC – the docs fail to suggest very powerful tips that can make a huge difference.
I learned a lot of awesome tips from different online forums (and I hope to pass on any tips I glean when I can – cos it makes a difference)
And one thing I recall from a healing cancer forum was how the chemo clinics put out cookies in the waiting room.
          Really?
Sugar feeds cancer because there is always a fungal connection to it (Ty Bollinger) and not many folks know that HIV/AIDS involve systemic fungal infections and the cocktail folks take are antivirals – but also antifungals.
We were not meant for this much daily sugar – which is even worse if folks have little expanded areas in their gut – and the unsealed gut (often caused by fungal form of candida) leads to extra stuff getting into bloodstream and that is bad bad bad.

And you touched upon the addictive nature of sugar – and just learning more and more about that too….
          Crazy

  5. Heh. I had pie and now, for SOME REASON, I want cake!
Grass-fed everything would be preferred, thanks. It is getting easier to find, now only if it would all get easier to pay for…
I have a friend who lived in NZ for years, and it’s interesting to see what she misses and what she orders and what she just cannot get, “Like NZ.” So much disappointment for her. She too, makes it sound darn-near Utopian.

    1. Oh how interesting that your friend makes it sound that way too – and well I bet she is displaced. And yup, there is still a hefty price for grass fed and look forward to when those prices come down – and sending you virtual cake – you can have it when the pie settles….

  7. I always think of NZ as related to lamb, which I love. I agree that sugar’s a bad thing, but I always choose sugar rather than anything artificial as I know the problems related to it and I don’t think we know that about the artificial sweeteners. Hmmmm, doors? 😉

    1. Ha! Thanks for your comment Janet – and i completely agree about artificial sweeteners – esp the obvious chemical ones like equal and Splenda! Aspartame is poison!
And even tho stevia is supposed to be the natural gift of the century- and I even grow it in this small patch in my garden (bought a small plant years ago and it comes back) but I feel like it is over used and I kind of don’t like it.
I think we can retrain our tastebuds –
It seems that everything is jacked up as “very sweet”
And there are no in between.
Yogurt is a great example – where there is plain and then cups with 30 grams of sugar – back in the day I used to buy Breyers fruit on the bottom and dip the plain yogurt into a hint of fruit! But nowadays the fruit on the bottom has vanilla sweetened yogurt on top.

Oh and lamb used to remind me of NZ too – but now it is beef that comes to mind –

    1. Thanks for sharing about those bars – I have not seen them there – and side note – just because this post has touched upon sugar and cleansing – did you know that cashews are the main nut folks are told to stay away from when cleansing – especially with candida cleanse – well peanuts too, but they are not a true nut.

Anyhow – thanks for your comment jo and good weekend to u too!

  9. Wow! It’s been awhile. Probably my fault (according to my wife everything is my fault). 🙂 I enjoyed the post but never realized you had been on a cleansing diet and had changed your eating habits. Same here. No sugar, trying to get away from wheat (but I love bread, and pasta, and…). We have been vegetarians- rather pescatarians- for years. I no this will sound gross if you’ve never tried it- I resisted for several months but now love it; One tablespoon of Grass fed butter for the good fat into 8 ounces of hot coffee. Blend it until you get a foam (I use an immersion blender) then add Stevia or cinnamon or drink it just like that. Delicious and smooth and no buttery taste. Let me know if you do.

    1. Hi E! And guess what? I do add butter to my coffee – some mornings that is – but sometimes some of my supplements work better without the fat and I will skip it. However – i did not know about the foam and yum is all I can say to that!
Side note on that is I guess the butter in the coffee was started by the “bulletproof” coffee guy when he was hiking and quality butter was provided to him to help restore strength –
And so the recovery benefits (and many say the antifungal and good fat properties of butter are still minimized or ignored- but as you note – grass fed is key)
Oh and I add natural cocoa powder to my coffee and unsweetened almond milk.
The best mocha I have ever had – the butter mixed in is satisfying and adds a creamy texture.
And well I did not know you were cleansing too- but I did know you were wise with some foods – esp after reading about the homemade popcorn you and the wife enjoyed!!)
I will definitely be sharing more later about my cleansing journey – which began in spring of 2014 –
Slow is the way to go because of the herxheimer reactions (healing crisis) and I learned a lot from this blog (by Diana) called “myRAdiary” and even tho I never had RA – her tips and cleansing posts were most helpful!
Thanks so very much for taking the time to leave a comment About this topic and I am curios to hear what a pescatarian is!
      Hah!
And just a little side note to anyone reading this who is thinking about getting away from sugar- what really helped me from the start was I did a double 21 day cleanse back to back – using Hannah kroeger herbs – and sometimes I ate 6 eggs for breakfast and made them in different ways. After 42 days of that I did a weekend with MSM- then paused – then used MMS and at that point I had broken the need for sugar (mind you I never ate candy and never even used table sugar – but I had things like ginger snaps- lattes (sugar in the dairy and vanilla syrup) and even the toast I had for my daily brunch was perceived as a sugar by my body.
There is a lie about sugar being totally ok – and because the human body is so darn resilient we can get away with it – but add messed up wheat – antibiotic use and no probiotics and many people (stars suggest more than 70% of Americans) have the fungal form of candida (candidiasis) instead of the circular yeast form- which is originally there to help our bodies decay when we pass. Ha! Well that fungal form wreaks havoc because the hyphae attach to the lining of the gut – smothering it and then the mucosa lining – which is responsible for 70% or more of immune function- well it cannot work properly. Then the fungal sludge causes malabsorption (and we are what we absorb – not what we eat….) and then the gut loses its seal and things leak into the bloodstream.
This is usually when a person’s parasite burden gets too high – we all have a bit of intestinal parasites and I guess even the first caveman had indications of a worm in there – but with fungal sludge (that is hidden and subtle) the parasites thrive in the corrupted terrain.
What’s worse (and last part…) but some studies have found that any existing heavy metals in the body also react different in the presence of candidiasis – and so it is lose lose!
And speaking of heavy metals – I did a very gentle and easy oral chelation cleanse using EDTA and it was another turning point for me!
I Believe that everyone should consider doing oral chelation at some point – esp those who had dental work like I did – but we also get heavy metals from food, water, air – and just living.
      Well I could ramble-
But maybe more for another time!

Thanks so much again for chiming in – this topic has become a passion area for me.

      Like

      1. A passion area for you? Really? I think when talking to non-inductees into cleanses and sugar consumption, you have to start slowly. And I usually leave that to Lynn, my wife. She knows more about all this stuff than I do. I just follow what she tells me. The bulletproof coffee was suggested to me by a relative and it took me quite a while before I finally tried it and loved it. I usually drink it just like that but now you have me thinking about cacao powder. Got to try that some time. As for wheat, as I said, that is my downfall. A pescatarian is one who eats no red meat or fowl but eats fish. No shellfish or bottom feeders, though. I follow what my wife tells me. She’s on so many websites that I can’t keep up! 🙂 But it’s been fun and interesting. I had stomach problems for years and it has definitely gotten better.

        1. Hi – thanks so much for this awesome reply Emilio…
and I hear you about the need to share with others slowly – it can seem quite absurd to people and I admit that it even seemed that way to me when I first heard about much of this. This girl, Dawn, back in Denver the 1990s, told me all about herbal cleansing – and I thought she was just too “Granola” (her son was named River too – and so um…)But then years later, I discovered that she was quite brilliant with the matters of the human body and the GI connection to all health. I still think of her when I see clove capsules! She also noted how the need to chew excessively can be a sign of parasites – and how some eating problems are not mental, but have an intestinal infection as a root cause – but I digress….
Anyhow, you are so right about “going slow to share” – and even after I cleansed for a decade- I still was reluctant about supplements and whatnot – and then after healing and repairing my bioterrain I “saw”
“seeing was believing” and so sometimes we “can’t see” until we experience.

lastly (and no reply needed) glad your stomach probs have gotten better and it sounds like your wife is a good researcher…. have her check out one of my favorite brands called “health Plus Inc” – they have cleanses to cycle through and they are very affordable and effective.
          have a nice day

  10. Interesting marketing about our ‘bros’ over the ‘ditch’ in New Zealand. I guess the population is smaller in New Zealand so although the cows are grass fed there is still plenty of fertilizer and effluent draining into the ocean. The lower population means the effluent is dissipated quickly, by wind and currents. Still it is a very pretty and clean place. The downside is that they allow foods like beetroot canned in less than desirable conditions in China, to enter their markets and then be on-sold to other countries like Australia. Because it comes via NZ, it slips through, even when it is rejected if coming directly from China. Terrible! I refuse to buy canned beetroot from NZ now…. their standards are more lax with chemical contaminants.
I love the turquoise doors photo! That is great. ( oh and just realized I am a pescatarian… now I have a new word!!

    1. Well thanks to you also for the new word of “chionophile” —
you snow lover and one at peace in winter!
Love learning new words – and actually super interesting about the canned beetroot! Wow so deceptive to do it that way – and I recently heard something about beets from Hawaii as something to avoid – I have s few folks in a health group who will not eat any produce from Hawaii –
I tried to find some info shared about – and could not right now –
But did want to share this interesting article about the “10 most contaminated fruits and veggies” and it mentions beets too.
      https://www.healthambition.com/most-contaminated-fruits-and-vegetables/

Super interesting stuff and thanks for your comment Amanda.
And bottom line to me is that people need to cleanse regularly and make sure they have a strong and healthy bioterrain so our body can be a fighting machine – I used to cleanse and left out supplementing – but when i did both things flourished –
      😉

      1. Absolutely agree. We need to look after our bodies and minds so that we can live a healthy and fulfilling life. As I get older I try to stay off any medication for as long as possible – healing the body naturally if possible, for there are SO many side effects of all every medication that once you start to take one, you then have to take a second to combat the side effects of the first….
Thanks for the link I will check that out now.
