Friday Food – Holy Guacamole!

There has been some chit chat this month about the price of avocados.

So I thought I’d feature a photo of guacamole ingredients – (FL, 2015) – and then also share a painting by local artist M. Haubenstock (VA, 2017).

 

Here is a snippet of the avocado price talk:

Holy guacamole! Avocado prices are pretty ripe and they are putting the squeeze on consumers, wholesalers and restaurants.

“We need to have armed guards standing right here,” said Nando Gonzalez, whose family runs River City Produce. 

A box of medium-sized avocados that cost $30 two months ago now costs him about $72. A pallet runs well over $4,000. Larger avocados cost significantly more. It comes down to supply and demand. Weather, as well as a gap between regional growing seasons, has cut the volume shipping out of Mexico. And then there are the insatiable appetite consumers have for the fruit.

“Avocado has become much more mainstream,” Gonzalez said.”

  2. Really, a whole box of avocado over there now costs $72? That is sooo pricey. Here in Australia avocados usually cost $3 per piece, which is already pricey enough for us. Had to smile at your comic. The green fruit turns bad sooo fast after it gets ripe 😀 I love eating avocado with toast and that’s pretty much a staple Australian breakfast.

    1. well actually at our local store they have been right around 1.19 each – which is not too bad (not as good as .89 cents but not quite the 3.00 where you are) – I will be back to reply more – running out now – ttys

      1. $1.19 each still sounds pricey to me. I’d have no problem finishing a whole avocado in a couple of days, and if I ate half every day it would be a bit of a hit to the wallet. BUT they are so good and go with everything all day.

        1. you are so right – and I thought you were going to say you could a whole avocado in a couple of minute s- bah! (says me – who just ate an entire one while waiting for my kept bread to toast – lol) – I did chew – i promise – lol
          and they are so versatile – I am finding that out more and more

        2. Hahaha! I’ve tried eating a whole avocado before at breakfast. I finished half of it, and started on the other half…and felt so, so, so full halfway and gave up, lol.

          Maybe have an avocado smoothie. I’ve never tried it before but I hear it’s refreshing.

    1. ahhh – you are so right – the “just right ones” are the best – and I sometimes eat the avocado right from the shell – cut it in half – slap the knife into the side to lift it out – add salt – grab spoon – enjoy …

  5. This is guacward is sublime, but personally, I’d choose I KNOW GUAC IS EXTRA (here) I even wrote about that, I feel it so strongly. Yes, it’s extra, I paid for it, now bring it to me!!! lol
    I actually haven’t bought any avocados lately. Maybe that’s good. More money for Honeycrisp apples and ripe watermelon 😛

    1. ok – so I am going to look up the guac pots you wrote – super curious now
      and when my kids were little – my oldest son always needed the guac at places… and like you – yes – we know – please bring it out.

      1. Thanks for the link! I’m glad you liked it 🙂 I felt it was better to close comments on old posts because I was getting a lot of weird and spammy comments on old posts, most of which were nasty. Dunno why, but almost immediately after changing that setting, a huge decline in unsavory comments.

        1. ahhhh – and I once read a tip to do that – to “close” comments on old posts for spam reduction – and glad it helped.
          and seeing the comments closed reminded me (yet again) how some writing just gets us to want to click reply…. 🙂

  7. I live in an area well known for its avocado growers. Unfortunately, after several seasons of drought and competition from Mexico, many of the orchards have been destroyed (some paved over for development). I’ll probably continue to buy them, but maybe not in the quantity I used to. At $72 a box, having them go from “not yet” to “too late” in a blink of an eye, is pretty costly.

    1. costly indeed if they ripen too fast (love how you said that)
      and so sad about the destroyed orchards!
      Back in 1987 – for a short while I lived in CA and a neighbor had an avacado tree out front and anyone could take some – vaguly remember them – but remember it was the first time I heard about the healthy fats they offered – and side note – just got back from the store and they were .89 cents each….

    1. ha – laughing at the cinco de mayo comment – and we actually have not seen the price hike here – but all last week I kept hearing about the soaring prices. and seriously – I have one “going bad” on the counter right now….

  10. Good thing I am not into avocado (not a local fruit) – one less thing to worry about. Phew! 😉 Loved the too late one – mangoes are like that 😀

    1. yes = mangoes are so like that – we wait like forever and then mush –
      also – mangoes and avocados can be cut into cubes right inside their skins – my eldest son is kind of a pro at cutting mangoes – lol – well learned it on youtube – ha

        1. oh I know – ha! and our local store called Trader Joes sells strips of the dried mango for pennies – I cannot have it right now (way too high in sugar for my current goals) but nice option to have if ya need it – and mango used to be my son’s fav fruit

  11. Such a fun post! Love avocado. Like everyone else, I enjoyed not yet, not yet, too late. Lol. It clearly reflects the avocado-truth of our times. ‘Too late’ has happened to us frequently for we show incredible patience with ‘not yet.’ 🙂

  14. Whew, I haven’t priced them lately. It’s not a regular staple around here — but should be. We’ll probably wait till they’re too expensive! … I love the “too late” cartoon. That’s probably why they’re not a staple around here! 😆

        1. well the absolute worse avocados I have ever bought were from the trader joes in winter park – the very few times I have bought them there- but it was like by the time we made it to the coast they were “too ripe” – ugh
          anyhow, hope youhave a nice week

    1. well good for you – that price does not matter – and it reminds me of “badfish” cos he loved them so much he had them shipped to his apartment.

        1. green pepper? what? well let’s bring out the jalapeno peppers than….
          and one thing I cannot eat – that shocks people – olives. yuck. I feel like I am missing out – like at an olive bar – but it is what it is

  18. I love the not yet, not yet, too late illustration. I always try to grab my avocados just before the too late part. There’s only about a four hour window in warm weather.
