Thursday Doors – Looking out and Door color meanings

Happy Thursday.

To join in with Thursday Doors with Vasco da Frampton, um I mean Norm 2.0, I have two doors “looking out.”

The patterns and bits of color are a little inviting-
Feels like jail…

And now – part 2

Have you ever wondered what door colors might suggest?

Here is one author’s take on door color meanings:

In case you cannot read the sheet (it is small – sorry – and I passed the book on – it was an old color and design book) and so here is some of the info:

Door Color Meanings

Black Door = serious, wise, sophisticated

White Door = Protective, fair, strong

Red = Creative, passionate, dynamic

Yellow = happy, welcoming, positive 

Orange = Sociable, young, warm

Green = Honest, healthy, calm

Turquoise = Peaceful, meditative, lively

Blue = relaxing, calm, quiet 

Purple = restful, spiritual, impulsive

Pink = Lively, fun, caring

I am not sure I agree with all of those meanings, but I can see the associations.

Jesh (here) added in her take on colors and I thought this was so good that I wanted to add it here – and not just because Jesh is an artist and think on colors probably more than most – but I just really liked how she noted the colors

“orange is that it’s screaming for attention. Yellow I associate with lemons, Purple reminds me or the courage and classy (view) of royalty. Pink is to me watered down red.

And for me – I think the color depends on the “type” door and the neighborhood (if you live in one) and what fits in (or doesn’t fir in – if that is your aim to not fit in – :).

  1. The idea that colors represent emotions is also part of marketing… Used to represent brands in a desired light, depending on what product or service they sell… Interesting to learn that this applies to doors too!!

    1. ell you are so right CB – color is HUGE part of marketing and The Profit show usually reminds folks of this at various times throughout episodes (he helps businesses recover and rebuild and many times a logo overhaul is needed or a new name is in store – and colors are key!)
      and I am not sure I agree with this author’s take on colors of home doors – so many things to consider – like intensity of a shade…

  2. The scene outside the door in the first picture is interesting. It seem like you were in a small quiet town. I also like the styles and the colors of the building outside. The grey building is very nice.

Hi YC – thanks for the detailed comment – I had to go back in and look at that gray building some more – which is now an eatery and a handful of apartments – this part of Richmond had large homes and during hard economic times (not sure when) but many were converted into apartments – and that was one of them…
      and did you notice a crepe myrtle tree in bloom to the right???

          and I did not notice the tree when I took the photo – only later…
          so nothing really – just part of the pops of color

  3. Thank you sharing the colour dictionary with us! It is useful to know as it applies to anything else in our lives. I really like the cartoons and would like to see more of them.

    1. Hi Peter – or may I call you PK?
      I am not that familiar with Ziggy comics and so I want to eventually see more of his stuff as well – but the rainbow (colorless) was a comic that seemed to fit in here and so that is what led to any ziggy at all…..

    Am glad for that little sentence at the end – I like to know where you would differ in the meaning of a color:):) My opinion of orange is that it’s screaming for attention. Yellow I associate with lemons, Purple reminds me or the courage and classy (view) of royalty. Pink is to me watered down red. Not to say that there can’t be some guide line for colors, but my age unfortunately did not mellow out my opinions:):) All in good jest, Yvette!

    1. Jesh – your comment made my day when i read it.
      and if I could write the post over again I would have invited readers to share what they thought of door colors.
      So thanks for sharing your take on colors and it was with that artist side for sure….
      and for me – the way i would differ in the meaning of the colors –
      well the main way is in the intensity of hue.
      Like a bright cobalt blue is much different from a midnight blue of baby blue.

      1. Thank you, can’t let an opportunity go by to comment on color:) I like your way of “categorizing” (for lack of a better word) by intensity. I guess in my mind I categorize cobalt as another color than baby blue.

        2. and for some reason – I feel like cobalt reminds me of what we would have called “royal blue” – did you ever have that name?
          and in oils, I had a season with “aquamarine” as my fav to use…

    1. well you are right – not every one thinks of doors as interesting – but Vasco da Frampton (norm 2.0) and his crew see the beauty and they have made up their own words…
      like doorscursions…. (door scouting)
      – and there is another blog – get this –
      called “legion of door whores” (here)
      and the guy running it – Adrian Pym (here)
      first showed me the beauty of doors….

  8. Looking out that front door in the first photo has such a vintage feel along that street. Reminds me of the little town I grew up in!
    We have red doors! Although they came with the house, I love them! LOL!

    1. Hi L – yes- that is a very old part of Richmond – called The fan district – and it is “varied” with expensive homes and affordable ones – I like to visit but not live there….
      and your red doors sound southern classy – serious – and I bet looks so nice with all that nature green in GA

      1. I had a friend tell me once I should get rid of the red doors. Then I thought of her home (beautiful by the way) all in earth tones and just thought “different styles for different smiles!” heehee! I kept the red doors!

        1. ahhh – yes – taste and preferences are so individual and like how you put it “different styles for different smiles”
          and we once had friends who had such bright blue doors (front door and double garage door) they actually made me squint when we walked up during the day – but she loved it and it worked for her -I think she also loved the beach and so it was maybe her touch of the “sea”

  11. Very interesting information on the color of doors, Yvette. This reminds me that once I was told if a salesman wears a certain color of clothes (it is like green-blue, I think), it is more likely you would buy things from him/her. I don’t know how true it is. 😉

    1. Hi H – well cool you note the salesman thing because I think some studies have shown this to be true.
      and I know some women who are advised to never wear pink if they give a speech and want to be taken seriously – they should wear navy or brown or black.
      and then i know some women who say “f that – I’ll wear what I want even if magenta and rock the house”
      but I think it comes down to wearing what exudes confidence and what helps us be more at ease – color wise and fabric and cut – do you agree?
      and I guess it is a side note – but sometimes I think women who wear tons of ‘sparkle” (like jewel encrusted shirts and whatnot) well they come across as “trying too hard”

  13. I love your door meanings too, Yvette. But the dictionary needs some updates/additions e.g. the current trend – grey, or cream (the wimps yellow perhaps?)

      how fun to read your comment – wimps yellow –
      and maybe update is needed or overhaul…
      because two things are crucial –
      one – there are variations of hue – and even some browns can be dull or electric – right?
      also – I think it depends on if one lives in a neighborhood and if their are codes or rules – we knew a family that lived in a neighborhood with strict HOA rules and even their house color was cited.
      but some live in the boonies – and these custom homes are trendy nowadays – anyhow, what color is your door?

  14. As always great photos, and I did like the saying of that cartoon “sometimes we have to put up with a lot of rain while we wait for our rainbow” good saying, I might modify it a bit and say “until we get up and create our own rainbow”.

      sometimes…
      even with all the effort
      with all the energy
      with all the good intentions
      we
      still have times of just waiting it out
      in my opinion at least…
      just those times where we yield, wait, and develop patience and grit – which I know you know amigo.
      but your comment – which is so good – also reminds me that there are times when folks play victim or just get sidelined and feel perpetually paused (maybe learned helplessness creeps in too) and so even more your point comes in:
      “until we get up and create our own rainbow”

    The additional information on colors was very fun to read! I actually agree with several of these, especially yellow and blues (including turquoise), Yvette. 🌈 Thanks for all your visits in 2017.

  16. This was a fun post though I’m mot sure I’d agree with all of these door color meanings. Besides, they forgot the one we see the most: brown – as in natural wooden door 😉

    1. Hi – well now what shade of blue is it? because the author of the book page forget to note that different variations of a color matter – ah?
      but I think blue is chill – -except our friends used to have more a cobalt blue front door and garage door and it felt “loud” and made my eyes squint – lol
      and did you know there was a new blue discovered in 2016 that was similar to their blue:

      1. Yvette, oh, I adore that new blue!! I think they may have to think of a new name though! And it’s got so many practical applications too…the way of the future! Our door is a dark blue, not too loud at all whilst the garage is the Mediterranean blue! It did occur to me too that no shades were given of the colours!

  18. I STILL haven’t painted my front door and I chose the color well over a year ago. I chose a subdued light green. We have a yellow house and it faces south, so I had to work with that. Not too deep a hue or it may blister, not too hot a color, or it may glow… The shed out back matches the house and it has a turquoise door. I love it, but I’m not sure it’d be the best choice on the front.
    Green is nice though, nothing dull about green for me (garden and all!) 😛

    1. ahhhhh – you brought up another very important consideration, Joey – the direction the house faces – and you are so right about some colors getting “blistery” hot with the southern sun…..
      and the turquoise actually sounds so nice with yellow – but so does green – and so do you have a wood-toned door right now (as it waits for paint?)
