Today is Super Bowl Sunday and I thought it would be fitting to join in with H.J.’s RED ZONE theme…. (his Cardinal Red Zone, which he does every Saturday- here is the latest post).
This little winter display is in the hallway at a small local library.
One of my goals for this coming years is to hopefully see more Cardinals in our backyard.
If you have any tips – please let me know – and I will keep you posted. Over at Perkypet (here) I found these Tips to Attract Cardinals:
- Choose food they enjoy.
- Use Proper Feeders.
- Consider Food Placement.
- Provide Water Sources.
- Prevent Frozen Water.
- Offer Protective Shelter.
- Provide areas for Nesting (dense plant life for shelter also might work for nesting)

This post is linked to Sunday Trees #325 and for those bird lovers out there, H.J. (@ AVIAN101) posts his “bird red zone” every Saturday.

Now…. a little closing bird humor just for fun:
And because we are rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles today, here are some eagle comics:

Those cardinals are just beautiful. I hope you get to see many in your backyard. I also enjoyed the jokes. Thanks for the smiles.

Cardinals? Is that why are called…… I figured that was not real birds, anyways only in the U.S you can find those type of things in a….. library!
Forgot, not really, I run out of cigarettes for today since it’s the “fiestas” in this piece of crap of “pueblo”, so could you send me a pack? If I go crazy and kill someone for cigarettes it will be on your mind and you will have nightmares because it was your fault

Ihi – yes the ones in my photos are not real – but they are nice birds and so colorful – hope you got your cigs amigo

How cute they are. I believe Cardinals like black seeds best. They are also early risers – the first to come at dawn, and then again late in the day around dusk.

The setting looks quite real at least from the picture.. Hope you get to see plenty of cardinals in your backyard this year. I think around VA, NC and SC, it should not be too hard to see them.
Oh those comics are so funny!.. Every one of them cracks my smile and giggles. I do like the “I might no longer qualify as the national bird … ” one and the “This is life, right? Hey, let me know if you see any rodents or anything”.

HI YC – yes – I think they did a nice realistic job for the setting too – thx – except one of the birds looks like it is falling over – or defying gravity.. lol
and thx for sharing the top two you liked here – my top one is left of your two – the “fly like an eagle” son…

Love today’s comics/cartoons, Yevette. I have some similar cardinals that I put on a small nature Christmas tree each year. As for real ones, we have them around us and this time of year, it’s much easier to see them, especially the males. No hints on attracting them, I’m sorry to say.

thanks for the visit and your little nature tree sounds beautiful. Does it have lights and how many birds does it have?
I am so curious because one of my favorite decors at Christmas are some of the small little trees people set up.
we used to have a small tree – it had about a dozen musical ornaments – my MIL used to keep it in their piano room and when she moved it came my way – and it added the best nightlight to the guest room and beneath it we had seven little mice lined up and a few other things. I remember standing there – holding my youngest (a chunky 18months) – just winding down with this little tree adding so much beauty….
so thanks for the memory when you shared about your nature tree

Here’s a photo of the tree. I have a number of birds and other animals under it as well. I only buy another ornament for it now if it’s really something special, as we have more than enough.

Sadly there are no cardinals in Europe (only the clerical type 😉) So I can’t help you with any tips but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that you will be able to attract them to your garden. Loved the comics, especially the one with the bird downloading! 😄 Have a lovely super bowl Sunday, Yvette!

Hi – thanks for sharing the comic you especially like- I always like to know and it feels like I learn more about someone — you know? and my fav is “fly like an eagle” (bottom left)

Oh yes, there’s lots to learn about what makes people laugh. Comedy is higly underestimated, especially by people without humour.

oh you said that right….
and last summer I met this guy that was so rigid – so uptight- and so – um, let’s just say I am not sure he even smiles anymore. sad too cos humor heals

Thank you Ivette sincerely. You made my day and made me smile when I red your post. I’m glad that many people like the Northern Cardinals. I’m lucky to have them nesting in my backyard. I appreciate your friendship very much. Your post is very uplifting. 🙂

ahhhh = so you have them nesting there – that explains your many photos –
and I will keep you posted if I can woo any to my yard…

and i am trying to leave a comment on your CYW post but I ma having issues again…
anyhow, regarding the catching up on blog posts – my advice is to not worry about reading all the posts you have missed – unless you want to – instead – just start with a current one and stay genuine – and don;t get burned out…
it is okay to miss some posts – and might even be needed as your circle expands (and it is expanding cos the rebel team rocks)

Thanks for the advice and I am taking it! There is just no way to keep up. Now, I just won’t feel guilty about it. 🙂 You rock too!

well when you visit here – you could take back one of the many fake cardinals we have here – yes – they are purdy and great – but sometimes the “cardinal gift items” are to much – well maybe not to everyone – 🙂

Perhaps “cardinal gift items” aren’t my thing 🙂

hahha – perhaps they are not (LOL) but those napkin rings, cotton swab holders, dish towel, light set, and butter knife would look so purdy on the brush bush

Hi M – I am not sure where you are – but on the map I have the Cardinal can be found in southern Canada, through the “eastern” United States from Maine to Texas and south through Mexico.

We’ve got two pair round here, sometimes more, but definitely two pair. We have all the right things for them, but not the right photography skills for us lol 🙂

haha – same here- well not on the birds (obviously – and I do recall that you have frequent sightings) but I have a decent camera with a sorta nice lens – but I think for birds folks need a serious lens – one that goes beyond the scope of anything I want to do with photography – ya know?

Yes, it is on one of my posts. Cardinal (cardinals) is a tag to get there, if ever time or interest takes you there. . .
I sent the story out to Guideposts and they said Native American culture and others view birds as messengers like winged angels.
