I’d rather be…..Road Tripping (weekly photo challenge)

My photos for the weekly photo challenge are all about road tripping. I was chatting with someone recently about their upcoming “drive” to Colorado – and we were talking about how road trips can great. There are times when they can feel painfully long, but for the most part, what a great way to get to see “America, the Beautiful….”

I have not taken a road trip since last summer and so my “I’d rather be….” is finished with “road tripping” -to see scenes like this:

 

Sometimes there are clogs – like waiting to cross the border:

Sometimes there is bad weather:

And sometimes we see people who are really “road tripping” – like those with the CannaBus:

As I peek around at some of the posts this week, it seems as if a few bloggers have similar on-the-road themes.

So I am going to come back here and link a few posts that seem to fit the vibe here.

  5. Ana L. had a travel theme with tasty layers. From escapism to reminding us how we have more access to travel now than ever before: She shared, “Traveling wasn’t as accessible back then as it is nowadays, so that collection of postcards representing places she had seen was quite an achievement.” and then got into this juicy part, “But I also traveled because for a number of years I felt I had to be anywhere but home in order to be alive.” and….. “I can accept the fact that early summer, and sometimes early spring as well, make me giddy with that familiar desire… I want to get in my car or on a plane and keep going, not looking back. I love that impulse, it generally makes me feel alive, if it stems mainly in the need to travel, not to run away.” Enjoy the full post here

      1. It was hard hard work … I posted three blogs across the journey and lots of photos there for you to giggle at (luckily you can’t actually watch me driving the lorry because I didn’t post any videos!)

    1. thanks for asking… I don’t really know what is in store for 2018 – well not right now – sometimes it is just a little easier (and even cheaper) to fly…. and then it depends on the “time” available – ya know?

  9. We love road trips and intend to drive up to NJ in the fall when we get back from South Africa and England. It’s great to stop off along the way to view interesting sights and also to visit with friends. Speaking of crossing borders, I remember many years ago when we were driving from Canada through to New York and got stopped at the border. The guy asked hubby what we’d bought in Canada, and hubby, not realising the ‘seriousness’ of the question, flippantly answered, “Oh, a bit of this and a bit of that.” NOT a good answer. We were ordered out of the vehicle and made to wait for a couple of hours whilst they just about dismantled the rental. We were not amused, and neither were the border control guys. Hubby learnt his lesson the hard way. 😯

    1. wow – that is a tough lesson to learn. thanks for sharing it and I can imagine the waiting for them to check the car!
      and your trip in the fall should be extra colorful with the leaves changing.
      last year we took a late March road trip through Atlanta and back in NC and I had realized that most of your trips were in the fall and not spring – orin the summer.
      anyhow, fall trip to NJ up the 95 sounds like my kinda trip.

      I did not fully realize I caught the strike until I got home – crazy huh??

    1. Well have fun and I have been very close to the four corners – but still want to get there and touch the four states at once.
      and Hope your trip is a good one – that is some pretty country around there…

      1. Thank you so much. I’m excited about my trip. I will stop at Four Corners, but will cover all the areas in the perimeter from Grand Junction to Arches and Canyonlands and Monument Valley to Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon and then the Silverado-Telluride loop. The only place I’ve been before is Pagosa Springs, CO, where my mother was born. Thanks for the good wishes. 🙂 ~Cathy

          and I have been to some of those areas (have cousins in Gran Junction and Mesa verde too) and my hubs’ family is from Aalamosa- not right near there – but over
          anyhow, I look forward to your posts and for the splashes of CO you will share with blogosphere –
          as much as I love the area – I still need to be living near a coast or within a few hours of large bodies of water – like oceans or great lakes… just me

        2. I do understand the draw to be near water, but I guess in recent years, I’ve become more of a mountain girl than a beach girl. I don’t know what happened; I used to love the beach! You have a lot of family around Colorado! ~Cathy

  16. I love your photos, made me miss road tripping with the kids in tow … since they have grown, it is so hard to make a common schedule for everyone to be able to join. But I guess, with pure intent to compromise willingly, it can be possible to make a go for it.

  17. Ah yes road tripping a sublime way to see any country, singing along to your favourite music, window down and no schedule or time limits, just go with the flow. Love it Yvette.

    1. thanks Pomme – and you and jack sure have your road trip stories to share – I always enjoy them.

      and sometimes there are painful periods on a road trip – depends – but last June – coming home from Bfl I had one of those moments.
      Exhausted and wanted to be in my bed – with only a few hours to go –
      so I used some reminding myself of the freshness that comes from the overall trip – and then moved into another scenic view and got sone flow back –
      and you are right – music – talks – or talk shows – news – podcasts – and sometimes quiet – all are part of that experience.

      1. Yes not all good I agree, but over time only tend to remember the good times. Except the OTT bad ones that become part of the story of the journey

  18. The title of this post makes me think of a song right away 🙂

    Taking pictures when you riding in car is fun especially when you are passing some interesting objects outside. It adds a sense of moving into it and a sense of traveling through . Love your first picture of this post.

      and did you know that I cannot recall where that first photo was taken? I know it is east coast – and think it is VA or PA
      – anyhow, I am curious if you are thinking of Willie Nelson’s “one the road again…”

  23. Ooh, fun! I have a road trip in May, and possibly another in April, and maybe even another in July, or two in July. I dunno. I love road trips. They always seem like the perfect time to be out in ratio to the perfect time to get home 🙂

      and as you noted the “maybe” part with the July options – I think you highlighted a beautiful part of road trips – the flexibility!
      oh and sometimes for me that “ratio” is way off and not favorable, but most of the time it is in good balance.

  26. We just took a short road trip, too! (coincidence) This week we drove from Seattle to Bellingham, near the Canadian border, stopped in historic Fairhaven for a pasta lunch, and then drove back along State Route 11, which hugs the coast of the water and has lovely views. It was a perfect day. At the State Park there were a couple of sea kayakers putting in, and the tide was super-low. Gorgeous water views from the park trails along the beach cliff. Only a day trip, but great to get out and enjoy nature and the open road!

    1. thanks for the comment and I really like how you call it the “intimate adventure” because that is so true and I forgot about that part….
      there is a very personal and private aspect to it…

  29. Nice selection of photos – the one with the open road as far as the eye can see is my favourite, but the waiting at the border brings up some funny memories 🙂 . It’s especially interesting how the insights about road tripping apply to so many other parts of life (perhaps not a coincidence)…)

    1. oh the insights do apply to other areas but I was not even thinking of that – I wasn’t – and I love when stuff gets all layered naturally.
      and I would love to hear one of your border stories sometime.

      at this one – they had dogs come right alongside my car.
      I must have looked suspicious in a rental and with two pieces of art in the backseat.
      —
      and that open road one was a sucky part of the trip up north – ugh – but the beauty of that road did make me pause – and it rained on and off – but that route is one I hope to never take again – taking the turnpike instead

      1. That’s just like life often is – we see a snippet of someone’s life and we think, “how great they have it” when in fact the bigger picture and the deeper layers may hide quite a difficult journey…
