Don’t Quit (Micro Fiction) & Emily Dickinson’s Take on Hope

Happy Friday Readers –

I am joining in with Friday Fictioneers. 

Reminder: This is FICTION. I have to mention this because some readers skim quickly – and so please note that this is a make-believe story about “work” to go with Rochelle’s Friday Fiction photo prompt.

Here is my FICTION 

“Don’t Quit” (word count: 100)

Others were on smoke break.

I was there to regroup – so I didn’t break.

When your boss coldly reminds you that you’re “at-will” with no guarantee for work, it feels like a brick.

Last month, I met a gal working for years to still have ¾ time without benefits. We talked about making the most of our current situations. I also remembered Mark’s paint job. How he checked his attitude and outlook while waiting for better work.

Encouragement emerged.

The right job WILL come…..Don’t Quit.

My fingers ran across the wispy grass.

Hope did feel light, like a feather.

Inspired today by: 

Emily Dickinson’s take on hope:

“Hope” is the thing with feathers –
That perches in the soul –
And sings the tune without the words –
And never stops – at all.

Also inspired by a lady I met who sweetly shared her story as we had small talk. She had a government job and shared she was usually working more hours than the “secured” full-timers. And we talked about how sometimes we “gotta work it – have to do what we have to do.”

I then shared with her a line from Mark Bialczak (here). When he was waiting for the right job to open – he worked for a little while in a paint department. And one day I just remember him saying something like, “I am going to work that paint job and give it me best.”

Yes, sometimes our lot in life is a lot less fortuitous and so may we all find hope, to lift us up, when we need it.

    1. wow- and I can see why you have found reprieve in art now – I find her writing sometimes so dense and heavy – and not at all light like a feather. Did you find some of her writing to be that way? –

  2. (EN) “Bella” in Italian means thousands things😉. Yes, I too find sometimes her writings dense and heavy…or also sad sometimes , but evocative in few words,I mean visual(so,yes, art is better for me).Have a nice day Y 😊

    1. Oh thanks for that – and now that you mention it – maybe Emily Dickerson was the master “flash” writer as you kept things brief and succinct and mulled over the perfect words for a lot of time – and I kind of see now that she fits the vibe/theme of this post even more than I intended- hmmmm

    1. Thanks – and sometimes I think hope can flirt away if we don’t reach out and secure it – need to snatch it and keep it in the queue (if possible)

    1. Yes – if ever is so true for some folks-
      But for the last 20 years it seems a lot of businesses know how to have contract workers and various levels that really favor some employees over others – and actually it is had likely always been this way.
      Hmmm

    1. Wow / when I was replying to isadora (previous comment) the word
      Exploit cane to mind and then I was like – “nah” and thought “too strong a word”
      But reading your comment (nice E words Yarn) well with the lady I met – yup – she felt the exploit – could not even accrue paid time off yet she weekly plugged in 40 hours plus!

    1. Wow – 40 years – well that adds more to the encouragement I was trying to offer – not everyone gets those cream
      Of the crop jobs – but maybe it leads to more enjoyment in other ways – – 😊

  8. I like the “Find Joy in the Journey”… 🙂 Where ever we are… whatever we do… there will always be tons of reason to be happy… we just have to look for it… 😉

  10. I must say, Yvette, this rings true though is fiction because it so real for so many of us…
    Hope only goes so far… one must also work towards finding that thing we want…

    1. Ahhh – Larry – yes – even though part of having that control might require some times of venting – maybe even a cry – and then problem-solving as the person learns how to stay stable in the midst of setback and disappointment –
