Sandwich Cubano with Sorryless and Dale (Friday Food)

Hello Blog readers,

I love it when blogging connects to real life.

Last fall, I was at a restaurant in the panhandle of Florida and noticed a Cubano sandwich on the menu.

I had been wanting to try a sandwich Cubano for a while – especially after Sorryless (here) had a 2018 series about searching for the perfect Cuban sammy.  Also, Dale, from Dalectable Life, joined in the Q-ban sandwich tasting (here) and so I placed the menu down and told folks at the table about the blog posts and that I was getting the Cubano.

((Oh and they liked the Sorryless blog name and dale’s “dalectable” – the play on words))

Wings and sandwich Cubano. If the Cubano sandwich was not good, I would just enjoy some Buffalo-style wings.

DELICIOUS.

I gave it an 9 out of 10 – but I really did not know how to grade a sandwich Cubano.

I just knew we had to have Cuban white bread and it should be pressed/toasted with softness inside. It had that.

It had to have ham, cheese, and pickles. Had that.

It also had two other kinds of meat.

MMMM mmm

So thanks to Sorryless and Dale.

Here is one of the Sorryless Outcomes:

Here is Dale’s verdict:

Oh and on this same trip, we saw some “Dale Pale Ale” – and I smiled because she was already on my mind with the ol’ sandwich

__

We also encountered some Starbucks Cubano coffee (we did not get any because of all the sugar – just not in the mood for that much sweetness – but fun to have all these culture-rich Cubano options).

Now I might try to make some coffee Cubano later this year. Recipe is HERE

Oh, and here is my step-daughter, with her baby and her hubs.

Ahhhh – Sometimes I am reminded that dining out can be such a simply-nice time to chat and relax.

In closing…

here is a video that Sorryless shared in one of his sammy Cubano posts.

So let’s end with it.

Hope you have a nice rest of your day. And if you have had a great sandwich Cubano, please let us know WHERE so maybe some of us can check it out sometime.

  1. Yvette!!

    H9w so very, VERY cool!
That Cubano looked like the legit deal, tell you what!
I’m jealous now, too. I’ve gone twice and so far have NOT had a good one.
Good thing I can make my own.
The search will continue come summertime as snow + cold does not equal Cubano!

Fun stuff. Thanks for the link!
    Dale xo

    1. Thanks for the sweet comment and impressed that you can make your own – that does help – and maybe you can find a place that gets it right – I will look forward to any posts about it.
And I am so glad to have found this hearty sandwich – mmm

      1. Was a fun post.
I had heard about this sandwich (before Sorryless and quest came into my circle, so to speak) so I followed Alton Brown’s recipe- even making it for my catering clients!
It is a tasty one when done right. Hoping next summer I find one!

  2. 😊 Speaking of the life/blog relationship… my husband is reading Netherland. Just last night he read a passage about a character from India that wanted to review four star restaurants but is forced to review small, foreign food chain restaurants instead. He says (paraphrase) I mean I think this is killer baklava, but what the heck do I really know? Anyway, I enjoyed your review. I guess taste is in the mouth of the beholder. Haha. Thanks for sharing the moment.

    1. Hahahahs
Oh whew – thanks for the laugh with the baklava and the review saying “I think this is good but what do I really know ” that is fun in its own merit and then also as it was me trying to rate my first Cubano
Oh and then “taste is on the mouth of the beholder” (very good)
Have not heard of Netherland – but sounds good and thanks for adding the comment

  3. Oh. Mamacita!

Yo comprende la verdad. And YOU have delivered it up. With some kind of wonderful, as if Celia Cruz and Grand Funk Railroad compared song sheets and then went out for tasty beers. And then followed that up with shots. And then, of course . . . waffles.

You had the Pan de Agua. You had the pressed and toasted. The pickles. . . check. The Swiss . . check. And the two other kinds of meat. Checkmate.

AND the verdict. You promised us something special, and you went even bigger than all that. And thank you.

    This rocks Havana proper!

PS- You have a beautiful family.

  4. I like Cuban Sandwiches but they are salty. Hence the need for a good beer to go with. Never tried Cuban coffee, but I used to live near a cafe that did a big business with it. The coffee looked too intense for my midwestern palate, so I never had any.

    1. Hi – this one was not too salty (not that I can recall) and I think the photo makes it look ginormous when it was a normal size .
And it does look intense as a coffee – you are right

  5. Yummy, Yummy! We’re going to have to try this one out. We just got introduced to the “Cuban Grill” here in the panhandle and are now regulars to the delights of Cuban food. It is joy to experience these new delectable delights that leave the pallet screaming for more. Great post Priorhouse!

    1. Thanks a lot and looking forward to seeing any Cuban food posts you make.
There is so much more than the ol’ cubano so I am
      Eager to see

    1. haha – I bet it would – and I only had half (shared with hubs) but half was really like a whole sandwich – and I love when eateries give generous portions – as a customer we feel satisfied – even tho there is a time for linen tablecloths and artsy presentation of food – sometimes quality and amount are nice

  6. Yummy! My husband loves a good Cubano, and always gives me a bite with pickle. Too much meat for me, I order the shrimp and grits, but I always get a bite, because it’s soooo yummy!
The coffee I could maybe have a sip. It’s way too much caffeine for me — I can have about two sips of Turkish coffee before I start to spin. But, oh how I want those two sips! So yeah, I’d sip once 🙂 Tasting it all in my mind, Y! 😛

    1. Hi – I am glad you mentioned Turkish coffee because the way they add the sugar first had me thinking of Turkish coffee too.
And you and your husband sound like what I call compatible eaters ….
      😉

  7. I couldn’t comment on the taste because I’ve been a veggie for nearly 20 years, but I can comment on the size – good grief it’s HUGE! You’d never get that kind of thing in the UK. Cuban coffee sounds interesting – I’ll have to investigate.
