JUNE 2019 Street Shots (Toronto, Canada) & Changing Seasons

Hello Readers, Joining in with Su’s Changing Season’s Challenge. June delivered some beach time.

I saw this beach memorial for a lacrosse coach. Lax Coach Kenny Jones – RIP 9-12-2018

One morning, I grabbed my Sharpie markers and decided to revive the writing. The original writing had faded a lot and wish I had some Modge Podge to seal it, but maybe it was not meant to last. Maybe they just scattered his Coach Jones’ ashes here and this was a short-term memorial with his favorite lax stick attached?

So adding a bit of marker seemed enough.  And it was a soothing activity. Hm.

June was a “dry” month (thanks to Shelly for reminding me of this term – when you abstain from alcohol it is called a “dry” period) – EXCEPT for two shots of Sambuca at my sister’s Mother-n-law’s house. The funny thing is that I was surrounded by well-stocked bars at a few places this month – with various whiskeys that I like – but it was a no brainer. Just NOT in the drinking mode – (also, last month I started my annual herbal cleanse (Kroeger herbs) and so alcohol is not on the menu when in health fortification mode).

However, when an 80-year-old, Italian lady whips out the bottles (Amaretto and Sambuca) to offer a treat with coffee – the answer is, “Yes, please” – with a smile.

Sambuca is anise-flavored liquor — Linked to #julysquares Blue

Had writing time and took this fun photo of my espresso with twist of lemon rind.

Had Tim Horton’s coffee, which sometimes seems to taste better in Canada – why is that?

So this is my mom and I — in Ontario, Canada — last month. Notice the jackets? It was about 50 degrees that morning (not the norm for that time of year – because they do have a beautiful summer – it was just a cold spell with some rainy days too). Anyhow, I had brought these lightweight feather jackets to give away or just leave at the cottage for backup (the gray one my son was tossing and the black one never fit right). Turns out — we used these jackets at least four times. whew -so glad to have them.

Now… the sad news is that on the very last day of the trip up north, we were in car accident. I almost did not want to mention it – so please don’t ask questions and let’s keep this on the downlow ((we were t-boned by a truck – it was not at high speeds – and so we are all okay -but I was in the back seat and I have sprained ribs. Have had over a week of bed rest – and now two weeks later my ribs, leg, and hip area really healing up)).

My niece (left), my momma, and myself – about an hour before the accident – and yes- we have all wrestled with some “woulda, shoulda, coulda did that different” –  Like we had different plans for that day – but changed them to give my niece a ride to rugby practice.  I was going to fly home two days before and now regret the extra days – and well… you know how it goes  – ugh! – but glad we are all OKAY, thank God, and it could have been so much worse.

So…. June involved rib recovery (sniff – because it comes at a really bad time….)

But before all of the bed rest  –

I did get some street shots.

Like this one with the playing card dress again.

This time, a girl named Kristen was hanging out and she let me grab a few photos of her too.

Thanks, Kristen. (Street Shot #1 – Charlottesville, Virginia June 2019)

  1. June looks like it was a lovely month for you (minus the accident) I am glad that you are okay and are on the mend. Great job on getting through a dry period too. I haven’t had espresso with lemon rind before, but it sounds like a nice twist. Last summer we bought a house in Northern Maine which was right on the border of Canada (you can see Canada on the other side of the river) it felt like Canada or even Acadia itself. Tim Horton’s was a staple since there was no Starbucks 🙂
June was a good month for me too, but I was also out of commission for 2 weeks. We got property on an island which is exciting, but I think the stress and excitement caught up with me. Luckily the time in bed gave me a chance to reflect and now I am up and about again. So nice to see you here. I hope you will have a wonderful July!

  4. I am sorry to hear about the accident and am glad to hear you are doing fine with considered minor injure. I hope everything is fine now.

It looks like you had a great June time otherwise. I definitely like “artsy person” picture you took. That is so cool.

    1. Thanks YC – and the month of June was a ten out of ten without that accident – 😔 — but yes – minor injuries and sore ribs mean my innards were projected – and those “true ribs” protected my heart and lungs and saved my life –

  5. Oh my gosh! I was just talking to my friend of 39 years and we were reminiscing about Sambuca…lol! Great photos. I’m sorry about the rib injury…I’ve been there and it’s quite painful.

    1. Hi – how cool that you were thinking of Sambuca – I forgot how tasty it is!
And I will have a lot more empathy for people with rib pain – now that I can relate –

  6. Well Best wishes for a speedy recovery. A great post full of great photos as always – I loved the arty hair.
I love the fact you were touched by that memorial enough to fill it back in. I often see similarly neglected things and it saddens me (I blogged about some such a while ago) – I think I would have been tempted to do the same as you! (I can send you some Modge Podge if you like!) 😀

  7. Yvette – here you were with kind words for my finger injury and you had a bigger injury, which I won’t dwell on it per your wishes in this post. I’ve not been to Toronto since the late 80s, despite being born there, living my first two years there and I am still a Canadian citizen. In fact this week, on July 8th, will mark 53 years since our family moved to Michigan. Toronto is really cosmopolitan, especially the guy with the braids, tatoos and interesting sneakers.

    1. Hi linda – first – thanks again for making time to visit my blog and comment – I appreciate our sharing

And had no idea you were Canadian and what a cool city to be born in!
I have a desire to go there a few more times in the next couple years – and on the last trip I was bummed out because I wanted to visit a place Anthony Bourdain had visited in one of his shows – but they were closed down for good! And another place did not open til Tuesday and I was there on the weekend –
Anyhow – were you cheering your the Toronto basketball team – either way – congrats to them !
And yes – rib injury sucks – and thanks for helping me keep it on the downlow – ha – but I a getting better and so is my neck –

And hope your hands are coming along on their recovery

      1. I enjoy our blogging relationship too Yvette – I have met so many nice people here in the blogosphere and would not trade that camaraderie for anything. Yes, I have lived here 53 years today and lived in Toronto two years, then moved to Oakville at age 2. My father was transferred with Ford Motor Company of Oakville. Toronto is so cosmopolitan, but was even when I was visiting there when we went back home to visit my grandmother and I took the streetcar downtown for the day. I am sorry you missed the restaurant where Anthony Bourdain had visited as I’m sure the employees could have regaled you with some fun stories of being in his presence. I was indeed cheering on the Toronto Raptors and glad they won – the others (U.S.) pouted of course and now the Raptors have lost one of their stars to an American team – sigh.

I’m doing better with my mishap every day – and hope you are likewise healing.

  9. Obviously I’m very late to this post but I’m glad to hear you are recovering. I hope by now it is a full recovery- sorry it was an unhappy ending to your trip here.

Yes – it was quite chilly here in June and now we are sweltering. No happy medium.

Hope the rest of your summer is going well!
