Hello Readers – 

A tulips post has been on the “Blog-Wanna-Get-To” list –

Today is the day for that tulip post because Rogership (HERE) recently shared that NOW is the time to get tulip bulbs planted – in order to get spring blooms.

…. NOW is also the time to share my post: THE MANY MOODS OF TULIPS

Last Spring, these four posts showed TULIPS in all their glory:

1. Crytsal (here) shared a post called “Eating Up the Tulips” (which she meant soul-food)

 Crystal and her daughter, Tara, went to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm‘s 35th annual Tulip Festival. Check out the red tulip with the yellow – and her words: live your own life. 

 

2) Lisa (here) shared tulip varieties from a day trip to the Tulip Festival in New Jersey

Lisa’s post provided more support for why New Jersey is called the Garden State!

3) Janet (here) brought us early spring tulips from Philadelphia

 East Coast ragged-edged tulips.

4) Joey (here) ended one of her tulip posts with this magnificent masterpiece

And HERE, Joey wrote “I enjoy watching the tulips open and close. I admire them. I marvel at them. I downright stare at them. They are beautiful. I love tulips.”

Tidbits for Planting Tulip Bulbs

(from Gardenerdy HERE)

  • As a perennial, tulips will bloom every year in spring. 
  • Check which USDA hardiness zone – HERE
  • Tulips are propagated through seeds, offsets, and bulbs.
  • Bulbs are the most common and easiest way to grow tulips
  • Bulbs should be planted in Fall – around September or early October – before the first frost sets in.
  • Tulips will bloom in April or May – 
  • Some blooms last a full month
  • Choose healthy bulbs –  no fissures, and no signs of rot or fungus 
  • Bulbs should feel firm, not soft or squishy.
  • Plant tulip bulbs in a hole that is four or six inches deep in the soil
  • Place the tulip bulbs pointed end up 
  • Space them five to six inches apart and cover with soil. 
  • Tulips also grow well in a pot – Mix the soil with compost, peat moss, or fertilizers
  • Once planted, tulip bulbs require very little care until spring arrives.
  • Tulips need lots of sunlight to bloom and to develop color
  • Tulips also need you…. to appreciate them  – to  nurture them – and share their beauty

    2. thanks Norah – and those fresh ones from Janet are turning out to be a reader’s fav here today – although my favorite tulips (and I did not always enjoy this flower – can you believe that – but in the last few years have come to…) well I prefer the traditional ones – the “classic look tulips” are like vanilla ice cream I guess – hahah

    1. Hi Janet – they were new to me this year too – and also – when you posted them in spring – and you noted that Phillie had an earlier boom than Chicago – well it was early in the season and felt fresh –
      I almost thought my entire tulip post would have to wait until next spring – but then when Rogership posted about planting bulbs – I jumped at the chance to get this draft out of the files… ahhhhhand wishing you a good weekend

    1. I know – and I had heard someone complain that they tulips do not last as long as some other “full season” bloomers” –
      and I also was thinking of you with the roadtrip tulips – hahah

      and LOVE the vibe of the tango with the tulip – has a nice sound – and Janet’s tulips do like like a ring of fire – and maybe that was another reason why I bookmarked that post last spring – it was also early in the season and tulips were feeling welcomed.

That was a surprise and a delight. 🙂 I love the way you set up each link- those are so well-done and tempting enough to make me follow them. My favourite tulip photos included your mood photos in the second half. Though spent tulips are often sad, this photo of the aging yellow tulips really appeals to me. Your captions are so well done! And that one at the end looks like an evening gown trimmed in lace – wow.

    1. thanks for taking the time to explore the post – that was so nice to read.
      and to be honest – I did not spend too much time picking the six flowers for this post – it was quick like last spring – and I have about ten more I could have picked from –
      but last night when I was SO GLAD to get this draft checked off the list – (because it is bulb planting season and that gave me my reason) well I literally worked with what was in the folder – it was those six random shots and the four bloggers that BURST my way in early spring with their TULIP posts…
      and so glad my set up was a success here.
      Because that is where I did put some thought into it (not too much) but I wanted to showcase the four bloggers without having the post be too “photo and link heavy”
      and at first I only had your “live your life” tulip image – but then wanted to share more of that post – and so I think I found the way…

    1. Hi J- in some ways it feels like only a few weeks ago that we were chatting about tulips – but it was months!
      and thanks again for being so open with your favorite flower – and it felt good to get this post off my list.
      now the only other one that is waving at me from the list is the “what to wear JEANS” post….
