Photos from Daily Walks Part 2 (2020 Countdown 19 of 31)

FOR Day 19 of 31 of the countdown to 2020 – I have more photos from “Walking out 2020” (Go here to read about this goal and go here to see Part 1 of photos from daily walks).

Today’s photos are all from the Richmond, Virginia Slave Trail, which runs along the James River.  This trail is a dense, tree-lined walking trail that chronicles the history of the trade of enslaved people  from Africa to Virginia until 1775, and away from Virginia, especially Richmond, to other locations in the Americas until 1865. Go here for more info.

The trail coincides with Ancarrow’s landing (info here).

Mr. Ancarrow was pivotal in helping to clean up the James River during the 1950s through 1970s. And this sign was made by the Boyscouts. They were pivotal in helping making signs to showcase Ancarrow’s efforts and help us remember that people can make a difference with activism and outreach.
My favorite photo from this walk. The variety of trees here in Virginia still amaze me. I do not “LOVE” all aspects of Virginia (been here a while but you know how it is when you move around a bunch – always a little displaced and you tend to like some places less or more than others) and Virginia does have some beautiful trees.
I joined the NANOWRIMO (national novel writing month) this past November. I reached my word count (50,000 words) but did not really enjoy the experience. Partly because I think there is a certain mode you get into when “daily word count” matters more than the quality of what you are writing. Also, I am coming away from almost three years of writing flash fiction, which involves heavy editing and making every word count. So for Nanowrimo, I would whip out 2,000 words in a sitting and it would be a little blah. …. Maybe some people whip out High word counts and it is meaty and dense, but not so much for me.  In contrast – when I am writing flash fiction it could take the same time To draft 100 words As it did to whip out 2,000 words – because in flash we pound out every sentence and every word (or we should pound it out – some folks are sloppy with their flash fiction and in my humble opinion – I can tell who fleshes out each word and who pounds out the sentences – some folks think they are better at it than they are – and some do not realize how great they are… such is life…). So anyhow, writing for high word count was a new approach and I found that in order to reach a certain daily word goal  – it helped if I became long winded about setting or action. That leads me to this photo here. This photo inspired me for an idea with action in my story. This photo was taken during the quieter part of our walk and I guess I was thinking of “Shawshank Redemption”  and Andy’s escape. Also, this was still part of the slave trail and I felt slightly haunted by the feet that treaded this trail before me. So later, when I reached my word count on this day – this photo is what helped get me there.
So Much to see… and thank you for joining me…. 🙂

    1. Thanks for the advice – very sound advice (and I guess the idea of the massive daily word count during national novel month is to help folks get momentum and to help them “get the bones” of a novel in a way they would not otherwise have gotten there. But I’d do find it encouraged me to add
      Fluff and stuff

  1. That does look a beautiful walk with all those trees, Yvette, even if the subject is a dark one. And well done for your high word count writing. I’d struggle to do that much, but on the other hand, flash fiction is a fine art. Every single word counts, so I’m not surprised you spend so long on one story. Lovely photos as always. 🙂

    1. Thanks for your lovely comment – as always!
And my only complaint about the walk was that I wish I had on some bug spray – the day we did this walk it was still tick season and parts of the trail had inches of leaves and debris – I was not really preloaded for that kind of terrain – but it worked out – hope your week is going well and ttys

      1. Oh goodness, that sounds a trial, but I’m glad you got through it OK. All the best for your week too, and for the festive season. 🙂

  2. Those trees are just outstanding!

NaNoWriMo wasn’t for me either. It’s a great thing for so many and I certainly am not damning it by any means. I don’t have to be a part of something to appreciate its being there. Same with Movember. I could never do just a mustache! LOL.

    1. I am not that familiar with the Movember – and I did not know you have Nano a try – I
have a couple other gripes with part of it – but did not feel like complaining too much in one post – ha

      1. Movember is where guys grow mustaches in November.

No, I didn’t try the Nano, but I know people who have. The opinions run the gamut, but are mainly good.

    2. Hi – oh yes- I heard of the no shave month – but when I was reading your word I added “move” into the word – and not the “mo” –
Either way – I know a couple guys who still have the beard on

  3. Here’s some of the history we may not like, but should never try to erase. People should be more like you – search it out and remember it. Great post!

    1. Well thanks – and yes – cannot erase it – also – there were so many people that
fought to eradicate this horrid practice – it just took time and lots of fighting -ugh
      Thanks for the comment G

  4. The trees photo is my favorite too! I can’t even imagine writing for word count. Some people function well that way but it wouldn’t be me. Bravo for trying!

  5. Thanks for the walk.
I did Nano-ting once. I felt it a waste of my time. Too much word-counting pressure and ultimately no exposure. I thought the novels would eventually be displayed on some sort of platform for others to access. I would have been interested to read others’ works. 🙂

    1. Yeah – that is a good idea to have everyone share and allow access when they are done .
And thanks for sharing your experience –
It really doesn’t fit everyone and I am glad To have tried it -have heard about it for years

  6. Thank you for sharing Yvette. A beautiful looking trail with a lot of history. Being among trees is one of my favourite things to do outdoors, doing a variety of activities! 😀🌳📜

    1. Hi Laurie – glad you will be getting your dose of Richmond soon! And we do see runners (and bikers) enjoying those trails along the James – I can see why you love it
