January Light Squares: Steve Vai Music (Swear Less, Sing More)

Happy New Year!

I was tossing out some old digital files this week and these colored concert lights seemed a nice fit for Becky’s January 2020 Light challenge:

Steve Vai (January 2019 RVA). Last year, the hubs went to see Vai, and a few other musicians, and they sent me a few snippets.

Today is an old friend’s b-day – Ron – who used to do air guitar in the sweetest way back in the day – happy bday amigo.

One of the Priorhouse goals for 2020 is to share health tips in various blog posts.

Today’s health tip is to SING MORE!

Singing can chase away grief – cast off a spirit of heaviness – and can give your lungs some needed space.

Yeah, yeah, yeah – we all hear about the power of “listening” to music. And most of us know to embrace music, jam when we can, and find music that edifies and lifts us up. But let us not forget what singing can do as well.

  • There is a powerful impact that singing can have on our body, affect, and psyche.
  • Not everyone needs to belt out songs – but sometimes that might be what is needed. Other times a light hum might do – or quiet harmonizing might fill your body with good energy.
  • Maybe you need to sing “to” someone – bring them your song and a smile.
  • Let’s all sing more – let’s lift our heads – open up that throat chakra – and let joy in – and then let joy back out.
  • Smile – sing – maybe do air guitar??? – and feel the sweet benefit.

I was walking past a “2020 Resolutions Board” and added “swear less and sing more.” I was thinking of when Sorryless (here) shared one of his goals for 2020 was to “swear smarter”  – 🙂 Maybe we should not swear at all – but if we are going to – let’s try to “swear less” or “swear smarter.”

 CLOSING VIDEOS

Closing with two Steve Vai songs:

Check out the opening in “Now We Run” jam (here):

And in Tender Surrender (here), Vai makes his guitar SING, which reminds me of Joe Satriani (check out the music after the 2:25, after 3:12, and after 4:19).

Okay – I am going to sing a bit – and wishing you a nice rest of your day.

  1. I’m fortunate in that I sing every Thursday night when we have praise team practice and every Sunday when the praise team sings for church. In the rest of the time, those and other songs inhabit my head, whether I’m singing out loud or not. 🙂

    1. Hi Janet – your comment reminded that sometimes singing can be a bit more formal – like you said for your weekly church stuff – AND we singing can be :not out loud” so thanks for chiming in….

    1. Hi bushboy-ahhh – fuels the soul indeed – and by the way – I really like how
you often (not always but enough) share music with your posts – you take the time to give us hand-selected songs that enrich the content – 🙂

      1. Thanks Yvette 🙂 sometimes the theme makes me think of a song so I bung it in. I have been doing songs with Becky’s square challenges so it gives me an extra challenge to find the songs to match my image. Glad that you enjoy the music Yvette 🙂

  2. We do all need to sing more. Thing is, if I find myself singing all of the time, it is my hint that I need to be playing my keyboards more…

Nice choices of music. I think all hard rockers need a couple of violinists to play along – great sound. And that last note on the second song… 😉

    1. ahhh – your comment shows your love for music – with listening – appreciating, playing, – and singing….
and you know a while ago when you said something like “can never take too many walks” – well I am not sure anyone can sing too much (well okay – maybe – but it sure is usually a sign of good stuff)

      1. Well, there is a time and place for everything – there is such a thing as too many walks if you are at a theater watching a move. Same with singing 😉 Thanks, Y. Music is perhaps the first true love of my life.

  3. This was good music, you are a…. ARTISTA!
Also liked the saying “swear less sing more”, having said that….
I do believe that swearing not on a constant basis but for certain audience basis makes a point the audience like.

    1. agree CPOne – and “sorryless” did say it well with the “swear smarter” – otherwise we water down power words – but you are right – certain audiences and certain points – good point Sir Spainard

  4. I agree, Yvette. We should all sing more. I just wish I was better at it. I wasn’t aware of Steve Vai so thanks for the introduction. Both pieces of music are very different. I love his guitar and music-embossed jacket in the first clip. Awesome!

    1. Hi Norah – that jacket is pretty wild – and this is not what i listen to all the time – which is why I passed on going to the concert – although I might go if they come again –

  5. Couldn’t agree more! Nothing better for the mind heart and soul than music and singing heartily at the top of your lungs whether you can carry a note or not. I believe in it myself!

    1. Haha – yeah – let it out!! 🎼🎼🎼
And I guess sometimes we need to think of others if it is a really off key day –
And side note – I can’t get into your blog to leave a comment – keeps logging me out – but I’ll try again later this week

  6. That’s a great resolution and it is more effective written there in the chalk on the blackboard. I do sing in the house and by the end of the Christmas season had all the words to the Christmas songs re-memorized, especially the ones from years and years ago, even the right pauses at “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Santa Baby” (the original version by Eartha Kitt, not Madonna).
