January Light Squares Week 3: Celebrating Sameness

Hello readers, joining in with Becky’s January Light challenge here.

One of my goals for 2020 is to share some health tips in a few blog posts.

Today’s health tip is to remember that diversity is awesome, but sameness can be great too.

We always hear about celebrating diversity – but there are times when being around similar, and like-minded, can be refreshing. Sometimes “sameness” – can refresh. This is why we join clubs and form interest groups, right?

While we need “different” in order to be healthy and vibrant – other times we “get to” nestle into sameness.

JANUARY 15TH: LAMP LIGHTS. Sometimes it feels nice to fit in, feel similar, and not stand out too much.  There are times to stand out, oh yes, but then there are other times when it just feels great to be similar (and yet even then we always are a bit different too – like with the similar lamp shades above  – we see variations –  lower left we have a brighter white and throughout the display we have some fabric more solid  and some have middle light).

JANUARY 16TH: COLORED LIGHTS. This photo reminded me of maybe the energy we get from diversity or from stirring up different into our lives. You know how sometimes “new and different” might bring loudness or clash – it can make us feel stimulated  – and it has many good things to offer,

JANUARY 17TH: BACKLIGHT.  I like the mood of this yellow-green backlight and the similar chairs. Linked to Pull up a seat, week 3.
JANUARY 17TH part 2: BACKLIGHT detail….
JANUARY 18TH: WALL-LIGHT.
JANUARY 19TH: SUNSET LIGHT.

The song for this post is “Cool Change” (here) by Little River Band.

This song reminds me of finding balance.

We need to embrace diversity, enjoy times of sameness – and we might also need to MAKE CHANGE happen.

Life is always morphing: changing needs and different modes. What we need right now might not even be close to what we need next summer.

The important thing is to assess regularly.

  • What do you need this season?
  • What needs to be ended or paused?
  • What needs fortification or reinforcement?
  • What needs to be created?

Keep assessing and checking in with what you can change and what you cannot change and possibly need to accept (for now or for good). Assess what you can add or do to find more enrichment .

“Time for a cool change
I know that it’s time for a cool change
Now that my life is so prearranged

I know that it’s time for a cool change”

Remember we can make small changes that help us enjoy life more.

Hope you have a great week.

Author Update –  two years ago to the day – I also wrote about “sameness” HERE in this post, Similar Feels So Sweet.  🙂

  1. Happy New Year! Excellent thoughts and points you write about here comparing sameness and diversity. Both are good, both are necessary, both are to be embraced and have their place. And paired with LRB…nicely done!

    1. Thanks dennyho- and your phrase is an excellent summary of my goals for this post – you said it so well:

      “Sameness and diversity.
Both are good, both are necessary, both are to be embraced”

      🙂

  2. Excellent points and photos (especially the lamps) as well. We all need support & connection – often more forthcoming with those we feel similar to. But we also sometimes need some shaking up a bit to look at and consider different points of view. Keeps life fresh. I think we are stronger for it – and better able to embrace the changes that come our way.

    1. thanks for your comment and the lamps are from Ikea – a couple of years ago….
and this quote from you is so good:

“look at and consider different points of view.
we are stronger for it – and better able to embrace the changes that come our way.”

    1. I love the word security added – thanks Lisa – and cheers tot he note about little changes – because I think many of us need to be reminded again and again how they “add up”

  3. I like that lamp shot a lot, Yvette. Constant change would wear us out, stress us out, make us ill. Constant sameness makes us bored, boring, and stagnant. The optimal amount of each changes but we certainly need both.

    1. well said – and some people need more of each than someone else – and maybe at different life stages – and this is worth quoting you on: “optimal amount of each changes” – says so much because optimal id different – and in flux – 🙂

  4. What funky chairs . . . I dig!

As for fitting in, as someone who doesn’t look to ‘fit in’, I totally get that it’s important to be able TO fit in at times. Doing my own thing doesn’t mean I can’t be down with the group effort, and besides, it’s good to know that my personality is such that I can be both.
