The power of art, famous artists, famous works or art, not so famous works of art, local art shows, the elements of art, stories connected to art, and then some quotes from artists!

Today’s red geraniums reminded me of a time I was sharing artist quotes, here, where I featured O’Keeffe, Matisse, and Rothko. Here are the three quotes from that post: 

Georgia O’Keeffe said: 

“You [hang] all your own associations with flowers on my flower … AS  IF  I think and see what you think and see of the flower – and I don’t.” (This was said to reject the notion that her flower paintings were female body part metaphors. She did not intend for them to look like vaginas)  

She also said:

“A flower is relatively small. Everyone has many associations with a flower – the idea of flowers … So I said to myself – I’ll paint what I see – what the flower is to me, but I’ll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it – I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers.”

Henri Matisse said: 

“Where I got the color red?  To be sure, I just don’t know.  I find that all these things . . . only become what they are to me when I see them together with the color red.” (He said this about his “The Red Studio” painting – lower left)

Mark Rothko said:

The People who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience I had when I painted them.  And if you, as you say, are only moved by their color relationships, then you miss the point!” (I have no idea when Rothko said this about his work, but likely it related to his large panels.)

  13. Beautiful flowers, Yvette. I say, “You go, Georgia!” but as far as Rothko’s panel/painting, it’s not my sort of thing at all.

    1. Hi Janet – I am on the fence with Rothko’s work – and years ago the culture monk (remember him) and I went back and forth about a few artists and he was a big Rothko fan (and not too into Impressionism )
      Anyhow – I think of him with Rothko –
      And our local museum has a Rothko and when you see it in person and spend time with it – the
      hidden layers of colors come out. And it can be a little nice 😉
      Also – some of Rothko’s larger panels were made for Blank restaurant walls and I wonder if they were more to appreciate in that setting – – calming panels of color – but I don’t think a museum filled room of his panels do it justice

  14. Rothko is right when he talks about the religious experience of immersing oneself in a work of art. It’s with the same hushed reverence that we sit in a museum staring at a painting on the wall as we would inside a church while praying.

  19. Geraniums are always beautiful, whether in bloom or in bud. These buds have not even opened up, so they have promise into late October – hopefully. You were so close the little hairs show up. I enjoyed our chat about geraniums … perhaps I need some to grace my front yard next year!
