Flashback Friday: Chihuly Red Reeds and art from VMFA (Trent’s Weekly Smile)

Do you want to know what had me flashing back this Friday? ART!

It all started after reading this recent post from Gallivance (here) featuring colorful Chihuly art.

The Galliavnce post had some wonderful Chihuly art outdoors, which included the red spikes of glass that reminded me of our local art museum’s permanent Chihuly installation:

The Chihuly Red Reeds at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA)are moody and change essence with the seasons. Always wonderful, but the Reeds do change. And in this winter photo,  the Red Reeds are quieter then when it is summer and the green foliage around them provides bright contrast and vitality. This reminds me that we humans change essence with the seasons too. I know so many folks do not enjoy cold winters, but I am truly happy with a full four seasons. I appreciate winter so much. The change, the pulling back, and the air has a crisp, freshness to it – and of course sweater weather, wearing gloves and scarves on a walk, curling up under blankets, etc. Love the summer and other seasons too, but winter has much to enjoy – including art that displays with a different essence.

When I looked into the Priorhouse archives to find the photos of our museum’s Red Reeds, I found an old 2019 post for Trent’s Weekly Smile (here), which featured Nick Cave art (and Lady Gaga in her red-meat dress – and did you hear that someone stole Lady Gaga’s dogs and hirt her dog walker?? oh my goodness): 

 Anyhow, I am linking today with the weekly smile here because I smiled from the art and smiled to remember regular visits to art museums.

Do you like that piece in the middle? I don’t really care for it. Yet I know a curator who shared it was one of her favorite pieces – which reminded me about how we all find different takeaways from art. So much diversity and something for everyone.

  1. I love Chihuly’s work and have been fortunate to see several installations, a museum show, and some individual pieces. That’s not the sort of art that appeals to me and the fact that someone would shot the dog walker to steal the dogs is nuts. Couldn’t they have just overpowered him?

      and regarding the shooting of the dog walker? i need to read the full story still but oh my goodness that was my thought exactly – overpower or other things before shooting – and same message to “others” that use guns – aim for the legs or depower first before a kill shot – thx 🙏 for the comment

      1. And now I see the dogs have been returned. I saw a picture of the dog walker and he’s a big man, but still! Too many people thinking it’s okay to shoot someone else for any reason other than defending self or family for a very dangerous threat.

  2. I do like the art piece you don’t Yvette. How big is it? It is one of those art works where you will see something new most times you look at it.

      i am not sure the exact dimensions but as you can tell from the down view – pretty big – and maybe it is 12 to 18 feet
      the next time i go (sniff – hopefully soon) i will let you know if it is still there
      and i know that you sure know art – with a wonderful artist as a bestie!
      and while i like a lot of art – this one i like less every time i see it – 🎨🖌

  4. Aww- the Easter egg! 🙂 🙂 Sad, because, yet again I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it to the UK for Easter. Or anywhere, really 😦 I saw and loved the Chihuly feature too.

    1. hi Jo – even though the place you are at is a might fine place to enjoy – i bet it must be hard not being able to go back to UK for easter – but it is weeks away and cases are down and so maybe…. just maybe?

      and with that said – winter has some weary and dreary days and i skipped the walk today because it was miserable out!

  6. This is a great flashback to some unique art, Y. That is great you saw Chihuly when it was in your area. It is a great photos of the glass sculpture you took in the dark – red contrasting with the black in the background and you can see the reflection of the glass in the water, giving the illusion that each piece is much taller. I actually like that artwork in the middle in the second last photo. It seems like a hand, perhaps a hand offering something but it also sort of looks like it is caught behind something. Yes, we all do interpret art differently.

    I feel you when you reminisce of the times we could go to art galleries. Here in Australia we are doing alright and things have pretty much opened up. Visiting art galleries is different now with many big exhibits requiring bookings in advance.

    1. hi mabel – the chihuly at our local museum is permanent and i think it was the third ever permanent one and the folks that made that happen had a good idea. i have some fun memories around those red reeds.
      and glad you are mostly opening uo – over here – florida’ is one of the most opened states and it is nice

      1. That is amazing to hear the chilhuly is a permanent exhibit at your local museum. Art can be ever so interesting – it is what you make of it.

  8. I just love Chihuly’s art glass! Some of today’s “art” leaves me cold but, as you say, we are all different in our tastes! LOL! I had forgotten about that little Easter cartoon. Thanks! Hope you have a beautiful weekend!

  9. I love having the full four seasons… Nice art work. I think I’d have to see the Mickey Mouse hand/Skull painting in person to see if I liked it or not. Have a great weekend!

    1. that is a good title for that piece – hahaha mickey mouse hand – skull painting – also you know so well that art changes when we see it in person – 😉
      and so far the weekend is going well – currently at the bey with son and his dog – and told him about your 150lb weighted blanket – lol 🐾🐾🐾

      1. lol, I mean, look at Mickey’s gloved hands and tell me that isn’t it… but with a mouse skull overlay… lol Yes, things do look different in person – paintings that I always wondered what the fuss was about, I discovered once I stood in front of them, or under them (Sistine Chapel). Glad your weekend is goign pretty good. Not bad here, despite the rainy day.

          and i feel pretty agreeable most of the time and can extract so much from paintings – i truly do like this less and less when i visit it – maybe i can sense the artist’s energy and that connects – hahaha

  10. Chihuly ❤ ❤ ❤ I last saw a piece in fall, at the Falls of the Ohio museum.
    I do miss our art museum and think I may need to go on a weekday morning to avoid crowds. Maybe take a personal day after vacation but before school is out en masse.
    I loved the comic!

      1. Yes, that’s true … it is about a 330-mile round trip for me and I don’t like taking the expressway. There is a travel agency that does day trips for some Michigan attractions and I think when I’m retired I am going to take a few of those trips.
