South Florida ART DECO & Street Shots (Lens-Artist Photo Challenge #172: 11-2-2021)

Hello Readers, the Lens-Artist’s theme is Interesting Architecture this week. 

 When I saw the topic, I knew that I wanted to share some archive photos from South Florida. Narrowing down the choices, I decided to share buildings with the art deco flair. 

However, first, here is a taste of the architecture you see around the Miami area.

 

Traveling south, we arrive to the Art Deco area in South Beach.

 

 

 

This under construction building reminded me of the time that has passed since the early Art Deco days in this area (early to mid 1900s). It reminded that everything has a life cycle – even well built architecture. 

Do you see the Colony Hotel (above). It has a CVS to the left. Can you see the couple lower left? As I was walking up, they were doing a reenactment of a shooting (I know, not very wholesome – but they said a famous shooting happened there?) – so get this – I asked if I could get a photo of them – they agreed  – and then posed again for me. (Nice!) – The next photo shows the lady with the finger gun. I am not sure what else to say about this – I have mixed feelings (Ha) 

 

Next up  -some  more street shots.

I selected these people pics because they have touches of the architecture and little extras like the railings, windows, and palm.

Here is the cigar lady we saw everyday for a week. I went to buy a few cigars from her for my cousin who lives in Tampa – and wanted to give her a little business – but this lady was such a bitch that I walked away and went elsewhere.  I know sometimes moods and attitudes can be overlooked – especially if there is a culture barrier or if people are less social.  However, there are times I opt to walk away and refuse to give my business to bitches. A matter of principal. Anyhow, in the photo below – we see the cigar lady at work (she rolls cigars right form that perch) and we also see some Art Deco design on the building. This kind of subtle design is on many of the buildings in South Beach and I just love visiting there.

  14. Nice selection for the challenge ;–) That shooting reenactment adds a certain interesting depth – buildings do have a history, whether we like it or not, and we shouldn’t ignore it. Oh, and “there are times I opt to walk away and refuse to give my business to bitches” – love it, I couldn’t agree more 😀 .

    1. Anna – I actually thought of you when I wrote that this week because it reminded me of a conversation we had back a few years- I think the topic was bitches – haha – or not
      Anyhow – the lady in the shooting reenactment was kind of inspiring too- her south Florida flowing white cotton dress and sandals – and she just seemed happy to be showing that man around the area – hmmm

  15. Miami is one of my very favorite places. And one of the (many) things I love about it is the mood architecture as I refer to it. Meaning, the buildings fit the locale perfectly. From the sleek modern to the ostentatious to the rhythmically painted . .

      And side note – my mother is surprised at how much we love south beach or Miami in general – I think a long long while back she went and there were a lot of topless folks on beaches and it was unwholesome and a big party place when she was there
      – and she is surprised when she sees some of our photos – and when we tell her about the food
      (Sandwich Cubano – wink)

      1. I love the food, the night life, the teams and the city vibe. It’s just got such a huge personality, and I love that in a town.

          But in the early 1990s I was afraid to drive through Miami Dade county and it was a different place (maybe scary like NYC in early and mid 80s)
          And I never would have expected to live it so much

          And the South Florida personality really does vary across the area down there – but so much colture and so many things to do – or not do if you need beach and pool

        2. Yeah, the town has definitely gone through several iterations over the years.

          SO much culture, so many different histories merging into that small pocket of humanity. The vibrant colors are indicative of that, for sure.

  16. I love the art deco and I had to giggle as I too never buy from bitches, sheeshka! And how odd those other people sorta reenacting a shooting! Lol – strangeness everywhere.

    1. Hi Diana – I agree to the strangeness and what a cool thing for me to encounter – I totally forgot about meeting them for Al out sixty seconds until I saw the pics
      And sheeshka is right
      Now I can handle a rude waiter (let’s just keep it about the food and everyone is happy) and I can handle some aloofness with non-people person – but other times need to be going elsewhere ;$)

  20. Hahha! I had to laugh a couple of times during your post. That shooting re-enactment is the most American thing I have heard of… possibly ever. And the second time was about the cigar lady. 😀 Serves her right!

    1. Did I mention I lived there a few times? Well not sure I would ever want to live there again but in retirement it could be different – hmmm

  22. My daughter and I had a getaway to South Beach about 8 years ago. Your photos of the architecture brought back happy memories of strolling together. Thankfully no bitches encountered and good for you to walk away.

      Sounds like ton and your daughter had a great place to explore
      And you know how you write that book about Las Vegas and things for children to do – well someone needs to maybe write one for south beach because it is so much more than clubs and party spots

  24. Everything looks colorful and bright – a warm climate needs colorful houses to go with the palm trees. I agree with you and thought about the old age of “you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar” – attitude adjustment needed pronto.

      And did I tel
      You that when I was a manager in the 1990s people called me when there were extra difficult customers – I sometimes was told I had a velvet tongue – hahaha
      But the truth is that I respected every customer and knew the value of each one 1 plus – are amazing owner – Kyle reed – empowered us with generous comping and we could take care of meals – and so even for the cheesy ones who did seem to be scamming – we could offer them something
      I say this because I handle all types of people
      And just a month before the cigar lady – I was dining out with my mother and a student – and the guy taking our order was so crabby

      But I had patients and it is hard to explain – even later the student asked me if it bothered me when he was rude and I shared a few reasons as to why it didn’t

      So I don’t walk around demanding anything – far from it –
      But there are a handful of times I have simply refused to give my business to such unprofessional treatment

      1. I was a milquetoast back in the day, but have learned to express my dissatisfaction/displeasure more than I would have thought I could do and polite, but firm, does get noticed.

  25. Great selections of art deco architecture, Yvette. I have an actor/artist friend who lives across
    from the beach on Central Avenue. The first visit with him I got the art deco tour. He’s so knowledgeable
    about the history of the buildings. Such a historic place in so many ways. Wonderful post …

    1. Hi – how fun to have a friend who lives right there – I think it would be too crowded for me to be there on a full time basis but if it can call
      It home – I bet he found a great place for him. Also, his tours likely have all the extras that only a local can offer 🤍🙏

      1. lol … he only gives these walking historic tours to friends and family. He was a well-known actor in Austria. He’s worked with DeNiro, Arnold Scwart etc., When he changed careers he became a primitive artist. His paintings are wonderful. We did art shows together. He purchased the condo way, way back in the 1960’s. It’s small but just enough for him and his wife. They look out their window and there’s the beach. Drawback: It’s Central avenue – restaurants, night clubs, people walking around the beach area at night – it’s noisy, noisy, noisy. Life always looks greener on the other side. Right??!!
