Celebrating (Lens-Artist Photo Challenge #177: 12-10-2021)

The theme for the Lens-Artists’ Photo Challenge this week is celebrating.

Let’s start with this discarded champagne bottle – someone was celebrating.

 

The next photo is of an encouraging message for those who might have done a little too much celebrating – it says, “Last night was the last night of my past life”

This next photo shows the backdrop for this saying.  This was in the heart of South Beach – where a lot of celebrating goes down and maybe some folks need to be reminded that last night is part of the past life and we need to be in the now and look forward to fresh days ahead. 

 

The last two photos feature paintings we saw in St Augustine, FL. They have a lady wearing a beautiful dress that seems ideal for celebrating. The little story behind this photo (which by the way, the reason we were there in FL was to celebrate our 25th anniversary earlier this year – woo hoo). Anyhow, the little story about the photos of these paintings relates to the fact that at first we did not realize there were two of these dress paintings. Things were busy and we passed by the art windows often – we were inside the little hotel and studio area – and then I suddenly realized that there were two of these – very similar – but different – paintings. My hubs was surprised too. I guess it seemed unique and we di don’t expect to see two paintings so similar. One was inside and one was on display in the window.

This second photo is a bit washed out with light, but remember, at the time I only took this photo to compare the two paintings -because this was when we realized there were two!

 I am not sure if I like the paintings so similar. Do you?  Makes them feel mass produced?

Perhaps this artist became very good at making this kind of dress – that took up that amount of space on the canvas – and maybe he likes to have the upper body with the arms in that position – and then he just makes the same kind of painting over and over.

  3. I love the photo of the proclamation on the ground. I don’t think I like two paintings that similar. I think I would like either one of them by itself, but somehow, with two of them, each diminishes the other. Maybe I wouldn’t care if I couldn’t see both.

    1. Hi John – cheers to us both having the 25th! feels crazy, eh? Although I think at year five I felt like it had been a lifetime together – we were so close and by the time the ten year came – it felt like 20 – (not sure if that made sense) anyhow, hope your celebrating was nice

  6. I don’t think Monet would have regarded all his paintings of poppies as being mass-produced so I’m sure this artist felt the same way 😊

    1. Hi Clive – you have a good point – and Vincent Van Gogh made multiple renditions of the bedroom in Arles. Also, maybe this is a big seller in that area and so the artist found a cash cow and keeps doing the lady doing with arms up and gown swaying… maybe

    About the similar paintings — perhaps the artists imagined them being displayed together and thus showing moment.
    Either way, I quite like them.

  11. Happy Anniversary Yvette – 25 is a big one!! I loved the saying and kudos for photographing it!As for the artist – kind of weird isn’t it? I love the dress, could do without the head. Maybe he/she just couldn’t do faces?!

    1. Hi Tina – thanks so much for the anniversary wishes – and the someone said the paintings might have been done in a series (dancer in ocean colored swaying gown) and so that is why they are so similar. hmmm –

    Yes, the photographs you’ve selected are great for the challenge, Yvette.
    The artist may have done a series of the painting. Some galleries prefer a series because patrons, at times,
    like to add a similar painting in two or three places in their home. If there were others in the series they may have sold
    by the time you saw them. Just a Thought from my art show days.

The woman in the dress reminded me of a flamenco dancer and I thought they were similar, but not identical, so okay and the artist would probably point out many subtle differences we didn’t detect. 🙂 The message on the cement looked almost like spray paint or spray chalk – was this the medium? Happy belated 25th anniversary Yvette!

      and I do think it was chalk – and we saw about five more of those sayings around the streets – so someone with a stencil and big pack of chalk wants to encourage folks
      and you are right – the artist would note the many differences – and I feel the flamenco too – but I also like the ocean colors he chose – almost feels like an octopus – or not….

Okay, it was hard to tell as it was so perfect … I had never heard of spray chalk until a few years ago when I stopped to tell someone I had admired the chalk art and he told me his daughter used spray chalk – I’d never herd of it. It last through rain and waterings. I went to Council Point Park one morning and someone had written inspirational sayings in chalk around the entire walking path … there are two, one-mile paths. I generally stay on the critter side only. But that day I went on the other side to take photos … many quotes. My friend is a former nun and also a retired elementary teacher, a vocation she went into after leaving the convent. She always carries chalk with her and responds to chalk art or sometimes creates her own. She is close to 80 years old and told me that she has done that for decades.

        I went back and looked – I do see an octopus in the sea colors as you describe too. It is like that meme that went around on social media last year – what color do you perceive the dress.

    1. Okay – the hubs and I were talking and we think they had a third one hanging up inside the gallery – I might even have a photo of it – and if there is a third one – well that means the artist wants to keep doing this one again and again

  21. Interesting about the dress paintings. I think I would like them together if one of them had the woman turned so we can only see her back. But I agree, these are so similar it might be that the artist was good at painting the dress so did a second one. Thanks for sharing these and Happy Anniversary! Recently had our 25th 🙂

  24. Many artists paint the same scene again and again. It’s like practicing. I definitely know the feeling of never wanting another drink again! Or any other behavior that gives you a bad feeling in the next morning.

  25. Happy 25th anniversary, Yvette. So wonderful that you were able to get away and celebrate. A fun post revolving around the word “Celebrate”. That’s a cool chalk message on the sidewalk. The person spent a bit of time drawing the details of the little flowers. I do love both dress paintings. The texture of the brush strokes exudes confidence both with the woman in the painting. And the artist himself or herself! 😀🖼

I agree with you that there is confidence in the painting – and a nice vibe – even though the model is a bit “Barbie” like – and I am not saying that because culture and diversity is a trendy topic – I just think the lady has a certain “type” representation – but did like the colors of the dress
      and our get was plan D for us. The pandemic had us change plans a few times and we had a good time, but also ended our trip two days early.

  26. Belated happy anniversary Yvette! The dress in the painting looks fabulous and if there is a subtle difference between the paintings it would be good to display them side by side as it could look as if she was moving 💜

    1. Hi – I agree – side by side would show a sequence or movement – but there was a mass produced kind of watered down vibe (to us at least)

  27. Oh boy, your first two photos would make great prompts for a story! One, the used champagne bottle. Who used it? What were they celebrating? Is the bottle empty? Was it worth the bubbly? And second one. what did the character do last night to make her need to change her life? Who is she? What’s her story? How does she change her life around?
    And the dress painting is marvelous. I like the feeling it evokes. A perfect viewing for you on your anniversary. St. Augustine is a neat city – so unique!

    1. Hi – thanks for the comment – and I like the photos as prompts – and does it change the story to know that the blue bottle of Champagne was cheap (less than 10 dollars) – I think it does – ha!
      and St Augustine is nice and the folks there are really into tourists (which mans they are nice overall whereas some tourist areas have crabby residents who seem annoyed – but st Augustine seems so jovial all around) and as nice at is – that was a pandemic backup plan for us (not my first choice for sure) but it worked out fine.

      1. I visited Saint Augustine the spring before the pandemic where I met some college friends and a California friend who lives there now. An interesting mix of people and neighborhoods with the ocean right there! For fun we did the ghost tour one night too. Should’ve taken a photo of that for a prompt… 😊

        1. that sounds like a great place to meet up! My sister and her husband used to have a place along the ocean in st Augustine – just a condo but my BIL talks about what it would be worth now…. I used to love that little city (early 90s)- then I went to liking it (2001 we lived an hour from there) to Tia last visit and feel done – but the food at Harry’s was good and we had live music – which for march of 2021 (still pandemic stuff) we felt grateful for that
