    1. Hi Dan- I really like seeing how so many of machines still work –
      Not like many of today’s machine Harvard built to NOT last (sigh)

      At least you tried quilting – I learned to see in middle school and made a denim frog and one of those patterned Christmas trees
      I also made curtains from scratch (proud of how they came out) but never tried quilting (yet…)

      1. I barely passed sewing in 7th grade. I made a quilt for our bed in my early 30’s and followed that up with two crazy lap quilts one for each of my children. I think I still have one of those here somewhere. I go though periods of wanting to create something or a garment I can’t find in a store, and try to make it myself. I even took sewing lessons as an adult, but honestly the teacher made more of my suit than I did! She held my hand the whole way through. I just don’t have the brain to think inside out, and right side out and two steps ahead that sewing requires! I rip out more seams than I care to admit before it comes out right, but I have made my own patterns, aprons, totes, skirts, shorts, and crafty things but, honestly, I am proficient at mending the odd unraveled seam and replacing the missing button.

        1. Hahaha 💛it sounds like you have had a lot of experimenting ! And cheers to a little know how because we have met some folks who can’t mend a button! But it is easy to show them –
          But amazes me to discover that! I hope sewing and handwriting don’t go away

    1. Hi Terri / the pup is my “granddoggy” and he has his own blankets but they are not quilts –
      And good point about today’s machines making some quilting jobs easier – and was just mentioning to Dan how seeing the older machines still working it shows what a solid work of art those old machines were!

    1. Well this is “not” my life ? The quilter ladies were set up at a state fair last year – inside a building and sewing for everyone to see.
      Busi-ness?? Not sure what that meant …
      Anyhow – the first dog is my grand-pup and the second dog (that most folks are missing and who is sleeping) is our pet —

    1. Hi Diana – these quilter ladies were working while near the displays at a local state fair. Clever idea to set up shop and answer questions – and I think they were taking orders too! ☀️😊

      Your dad made quilts? That is so awesome
      Quilts are nice because they can be art and soften the sound in a room (maybe even add warmth that way) and they can be a covering.

  13. Beautiful quilts – my great-grandmother used to make quilts and we had some of her handiwork for years – cotton quilts just used in Summer and she also made a feather tick from their geese. It was on my bed and it split a seam and feathers went everywhere. My grandmother used to have a wooden Singer sewing machine like the one you show here. She used it for her plants – she had a beautiful Christmas cactus which sat on the top and other plants on the other spaces.

    1. The sewing machine case as a plant holder sounds interesting – and the leaking feathers sounds like it got everywhere . Also – seems like we buy everything these days and I cannot even imagine what it would be like to make feather tick fro geese (and sure glad I don’t have to de-feather my own chickens or use a washing board – or ringer washer like my grandmother had)
      Anyhow –
      I am glad there are still quilt makers in the world and I follow Tierney – who shares about the modern day quilt making experience – pretty cool

      1. My mother used a wringer washer until 1985 when she finally got a a regular washer – I’d stand and watch the clothes going through it – SLOWLY AT FIRST

        1. I am so glad to have experienced using my grandmother’s wringer washer – so I knew exactly what you meant when it goes slow at first!

        2. Yes, what a painstaking way to wash clothes. And my father said there was no room to put a washer and dryer, so she hung her clothes outside from April to November and the rest of the time in the basement laundry room. As soon as he was gone we had an appliance salesman come out to measure and he said “no problem” – there is not a lot of room, but adequate room for both.

  16. Your post made me reminisce. I made several quilts in my past. Just before I retired, I bought an expensive machine that I thought I would use when I had time. Then I got a new hobby – blogging and had no time to quilt. Not only that, the machine was so complex that I could barely thread it. I gave it to my friend Connie who quilts all the time. I don’t think she ever uses it a prefers her old singer single stitch machine. Newer is not necessarily better, I guess.
