Clowns in my Coffee (🎶🎶 You’re So Vain – Carly Simon 🎶🎶)

Reblogging post from the archives –

Maybe today – we can stand – or pull up a seat – and slow down –

Pause…. simplify for a bit –

Maybe even look up to the sky and enjoy the clouds.

Did you know that I won five dollars because I had the correct lyrics to Carly Simon’s “You’re So Vain” song?

🎶🎶  🎶🎶  🎶🎶

I am not a gamblin’ woman, but I was sitting around with a family member (back in early 1990s) and this family member insisted the line was “Clowns in My Coffee” – this was before streaming of music – before we could run to Youtube for an answer. Later, when we did check the song on someone’s CD (remember those?) well.. I won the bet – it was not “clowns” but “clouds” in my coffee. Made for good fun.😊☀️ (And many times I have the lyrics wrong because some of them sound so weird, eh?)

Okay – have a good day and let’s pause and dream a little – or a lot – clouds or clowns – let’s lighten up and not get too serious – right?

  1. It’s not light here yet, but since lockdown mornings have been pretty chilled. Afternoons we get out and walk, and chase a few clouds. The youngsters stay well so I have no cause for complaint. 🙂 🙂 Have a good week, Yvette!

    1. nah – don’t even think this involved money collection! hahah
but i know i have been writing on many songs – some songs beg for making lyrics our own

    1. hi Clive – this song is truly a gem and even though i could hear clouds – of course there are many of songs i have butchered the lyrics on- well
enough of them at least – and see you for tuesday tunes in a little while 🎵🎵

      1. Over the years there have been many like that. My favourite is probably Purple Haze, by Jimi Hendrix, where many are convinced that in the actual line “excuse me while I kiss the sky” he is saying “excuse me while I kiss this guy.” Makes a difference…

Tuesday Tunes is there whenever you feel up to it 😉

  2. Glad you won – that song would have taken a very creepy turn if it were “clowns ” 😉 There is still a lot of conjecture about who the song is about, though I think Warren Beatty is most people’s choice. On the other hand, I don’t care how vain he was, the song really IS about him 😉

    1. well i will
trust your expertise on who the song IS about – even though i have dedicated this song to a couple people over the years / sang it to them in their honor hahah

    1. aHI YC – you are so right – could use a search engine for many options on song lyrics – not just Youtube
and as i have noted in the post (added a note) i have been seeing so many times on song lyrics and sometimes it makes for a great version of the song or makes for good fun

    1. hi – glad to share a smile –
and sometimes clouds remind me of that song – well that opening photo did
and i think it is fun to mess up song lyrics – or mumble them – not sure if you saw breaking Bad show but one time when hank sings “eye of the tiger” he mumbles sounds and it was so fun

  5. I’m so relieved that I haven’t been wrong all these years. When I saw your title, I thought, “No way it’s clowns!!” Phew! 🙂 But I’m not so vain that I thought I could never be wrong about song lyrics.

  6. Ha! What did we do before we could instantly look up song lyrics? I used to think Credence Clearwater Revival’s Bad Moon on the Rise was There’s a Bathroom on the Right!

  7. I have always liked Carly Simon’s songs, especially that song. When I read the title of your post, I thought “wow, I always thought it was ‘clouds in my coffee'” then I read the post. Those are some awesome clouds you have in this post Yvette. I just thought of that song this morning as there was a blurb on the Bloomberg Business Report that soon, no more Lear jets will be made. They mentioned the rich and famous having their own and played the excerpt from “You’re So Vain” with this line:
“Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia, to see the total eclipse of the sun.”

  10. Hahaha!! I remember those days and I think we’ve had that conversation or disagreement too in my family – clowns or clouds! Haha! There’s been many other songs like this back in the day where it was difficult to hear the correct word!? Mumble jumble singing!! What a great post and I love the light hearted vibe. Let’s all smile and laugh!!! 🤣🤩👍😀

  11. Loved that song and listened to it so much that not hearing it for a few years, can remember all the words like I heard it yesterday. I always liked Carly Simon’s music but Linda Ronstadt was a personal favorite. I think I knew it was “clouds in my coffee” and “send in the clowns” (Judy Collins) … gotta keep the ladies straight. There are an awful lot of lyrics that now I see them written out I think “well, why did I think that?”

You continue to impress me with your knowledge In so many areas – like music and the songs from various times
      I don’t think I know Judy Colin’s

      1. Thank you Yvette – that’s nice of you to say that. Judy Collins was a folksinger and now in her early 80s. Back when I was a teen, I had a good friend who fancied herself as Judy Collins. She liked JC’s music so much, she learned to play folk guitar, took singing lessons and sounded just like Judy Collins. She even wore her blond hair the same way as her idol. She told me I needed to learn how to sing and play guitar and I could be Joni Mitchell. 🙂

  12. A fun post. Lol you took me back to those days with no Youtube and making up lyrics so convincing we believed them ourselves. Here’s one of my favs by Manfred Man – Blinded by the light, wrapped up like a douche you know they roll her in the night. Lmaooooooooo. Hope you had a chuckle. 🙂
