October Leaves & Street Shots (19OCT2022) and Shame on the NFL for Gambling Promotions

Hello Everyone.

Today’s post is to join in with Dawn’s 2022 Festival of Leaves – to share street shots, and then rant a little about the NFL and their Fall 2022 gambling commercials.

Part 2: Priorhouse Street Shots from Richmond, VA October 2022

For those that missed it, the October Priorhouse Interview (here) featured Brian (here and here) who takes some GREAT street shots.

This next street shot, a Steelers’ fan representing her favorite team with clothing, reminded me of author Ana Linden because this lady spent some time showing me her team-themed “high heels”  – Also, in case you missed it, the August Priorhouse Interview (here) featured Ana (here). 

I was leaving a store and saw this lady, a proud Steelers’ fan, walking by and I said something like “Go Steelers” – and of course she stopped to chat with me. I say “of course” because did you know that I never met a Steelers’ fan that I did not like?

I never meet a rude Steelers fan! Some NFL fans can be cocky (and some teams are specifically notorious for their rude fans – I think the former Oakland Raiders and the Cowboys are two of them,,,) but Steelers fans (IMO) are truly some of the coolest folks. And you usually can’t miss them because the black and gold (black an’ yella) gear really stands out.
While chatting – This Steelers’ fan showed me her team-themed shoes. She sometimes wears these heels when she has home NFL parties (and everyone is amazed that she can wear them for hours) or she wears them when she goes out to dance. She still dances at 64 years of age! It is so much fun connecting with folks who are spirited and fun like this lady was.

Side note: NFL CHAT

1) NFL WOMEM ANNOUNCER ATTIRE

The Steelers’s fan (above) reminded me of the NFL chatting with Marc from Sorryless blog. Marc (here) writes about sports, current events, food, modern-day heroes, etc. – and we recently chatted about attire. Because in this day and age of great awokeness,  the NFL  has a lot of women announcers.

This inclusion of women (as announcers and refs) is awesome – and I recently watched the movie Flashback (2021) Prime Video, which had a fun depiction of the female plight –

The movie Flashback reminded me of A Christmas Carol “time travel” and the The Family Man (2000) “glimpse” – and paradigm shift in outlook. Flashback takes us on a comedic journey with a female lawyer who travels back in time to become enlightened about the struggle and fight for women’s rights over the years.

Anyhow, one of my NFL complaints relates to when the women wear “distracting clothes” or when they have an “unprofessional” look. My mother-n-law has complained about this for years with news anchors – she was annoyed and puzzled about why news anchor men had to sport the suits but the women could wear sexy dresses, show cleavage, have shoulders showing, and show knobby knees and thighs while walking along the camera.

I could relate to what my MIL was talking about when some of the NFL female announcers (well one lady in particular) wore clothes that were a huge distraction. It took away from the show. How do you feel about this clothing topic? I guess they do not have to dress completely boring, but when an outfit is distracting it takes away from the task at hand, which should be discussing football and presenting the next game or sharing football tidbits for viewers.

NFL attire for women should be professional and not distracting. 

2) NFL GAMBLING ADS

One more NFL rant, or make that a complaint, is the tremendous influx of gambling commercials during the games this year. Commercial after commercial has plugs for gambling and this is very concerning. I am sure it is a huge source of revenue for the NFL. And some cities that were going under (financial problems) have brought in casinos to get needed money to help the city. I am not saying that is good, but It can help the city with funding. So I guess I understand the need for money and using gambling to help that. 

So was the NFL hurting for money?

Did the NFL seriously need to bring in this huge promotion for gambling? The sad thing is that the millions of younger viewers are now exposed to more and more plugs for gambling. The increased gambling promotion will also lure more adults into this dangerously destructive behavior. It comes across as fun, but often pulls from enjoying the games. 

The gambling promotion is done in a subtly enticing way. The ads come on during games and so viewers connect it to the NFL and this makes it seem good or okay. And in a day and age when porn exposure (and porn addiction) starts before puberty begins  – and in a time when opioids, alcohol, scripts, and other addictions are plaguing society -DO WE REALLY NEED THE NFL to allow so many gambling commercials? I think NOT!

I am disappointed with the NFL gambling commercials. I am bored by them but then I also worry for what will trickle into society from this inundation. And the Kevin Hart commercials are particularly sad because he appeals to so many younger folks and to so many diverse folks in general. Does Hart realize the dangers of his ads? 

Here is what I wonder.

Who at the NFL thought the many gambling commercials would be a good idea? Do they NOT make enough money from transportation and alcohol commercials? Do they not make enough money from all the “PRIME VIDEO” ads and the increased Amazon sponsorship?  The folks at the NFL decided that showing Janet Jackson’s nipple is not okay, yet thousands of gambling ads are okay and might even be good for fans. Huh? That is wrong.

Gambling will go on without the need for all of these ads. The many ads pose a threat for some viewers and then they ruin the experience for other viewers who prefer a variety of commercials. The constant exposure to plugs for gambling is disappointing. Shame on the NFL for this surge of gambling promotions.

  1. Yes, I agree and voted no to both the gambling props on my ballot. We still will have some, but let’s not encourage more! It ruins people’s lives…

    1. Paula, we also voted against the gambling props for our area (and then saw an ad that said they will be back to try again – sigh) – and you are right – it “ruins lives”

    1. Hello Robbie. thanks for chiming in. I like how you said gambling “should not be advertised at all”- and that used to be the case, right? Now I don’t mind some advertising, but I think someone forgot how many young folks watch the NFL – and also they forgot how dangerous this activity can be – and one day I had to stop counting commercials because it was like every other ad was for gambling. very sad.

  3. My ex-husband had a gambling addiction (stock market) and one reason it’s so awful is because it’s so little understood. I literally spent years fighting the IRS and state tax board to be relieved from his debt. Your leaf collection is lovely!

      And I forget what age I was when someone first told me stocks were gambling – I always thought investment but it really can be dangerous and I guess you know the consequences first hand! Wow! And sounds like a huge headache!
      Not sure if you lie the TV show Monk
      But they have an episode where they go to Las Vegas and I thought it was well done because they highlight so many Vegas things – which included the Randy Disher character losing money and addicted to gambling (and monk rescues him) but they showed the ugly side of Vegas

  4. Your photos are lovely, Yvette. Autumn has always been my favourite season, for the wonderful colours of leaves. I completely agree on gambling ads – they should be banned from tv and any location that children could see them. As for presenters in sexy clothes, anything which helps remove the tedium of that manufactured ‘sport’ is fine by me 😊

  7. I absolutely LOVE colourful autumn leaves. Unfortunately, our autumn leaves on Vancouver Island are never extremely colourful — especially not this year where we have been having a very extended summer. Thank you for the great captures!

  9. Lovely fall leaves! I agree about gambling… not a fan in most forms, but online gambling seems especially insidious.

    My husband and I were on the trolley here in San Diego yesterday when it suddenly filled up with Padres fans wearing the team garb. They sure were positive, excited, and fun to watch… and the outfitted Phillies fan among them was not in any danger 🙂

    1. Oh that is so fun to imagine the trolley filled with padre fans and glad the Phillies fan (who was representing) was not in danger – hahaha

      Also – your point about the “online” access points out another huge danger
      Because back in the day – I would assume folks would have to travel to casinos – cars rooms – or race tracks to get their gambling thrills
      But now it is at their finger tips and when presented as so much fun – it might be worse then all this access to porn?
      The gambling addiction is really kept silent in our culture – just like they quiet the suicide jumps off the Sam Francisco Golden Gate Bridge – we need more awareness about how very very bad gambling is…..

      And for the record – I am not a Steelers fan (still a little bitter about Big Ben and the Broncos game 2005) but I LOVE Steelers fans and there are many in my area!

  11. I hate gambling ads!! I would like to see them off the screen altogether but if they have to be shown for revenue purposes it should be between 9pm and 6am which I would hope is outside of childrens viewing times.

    1. Hi – that is a great idea to have the ads in that alter window when most children are in bed!
      But these ads are on and off during the day and so many youth look up to the NFL (not sure if that is a good thing) but the current inundation of ads can be polluting and is annoying as well

      1. It is the Spring horse racing time here. It goes until mid November and the ads are getting more and more.
        At least I had the satisfaction of TV news footage of people at the races in the wet. All those fine clothes and shoes 😂😂

  14. Love your leaf shots, Yvette, and I completely agree about the gambling. There are ads for it all the time. As for the clothing of the female announcers/commentators/etc., I’ve said for ages and ages that if they want to be taken seriously, they should dress more seriously. If not, there are a few male announcers I’d like to see maybe in workout clothes or something (although NO Speedos, please!!) 🙂 Newswomen and women who do the weather fall into the same fashion pit. Let us focus on what you’re saying rather than your cleavage.

      And they do get taken less seriously –
      And this is not about getting away from being feminine and not a call to go boring – it is a call for professionalism –
      And why are the men all in suits and ties but ladies can wear shorts showing their thighs and then that cleavage – absolutely no reason for that on any NFL show – and side note – it has gotten better in the last few weeks – but I do wonder why men have such consistency and then women can be all over the place with attire
      A sparkly purple dress wasn’t too bad – but the pink suit and short shorts was a distraction

    As for never meeting a Steelers fan that was rude? I can’t remember ever having done so either. I do have a very good friend who is a Cowboys fan and mango! He’s a lot to take this time of year, until the team does its annual el foldo, that is. After which he gets very melancholic and really, I don’t know which is worse.

    Bah humbug to the gambling and football marriage. As recently as six years ago, the commissioner insisted his league would never get in bed with the industry. And well, here we are. It’s a bad look on so many levels, not the least of which is all the kids that place wagers these days. I mean, it’s everywhere. Kids laying down parlays with money they really don’t have. No bueno.

    1. Hi – your Cowboys fan pal reminds me of a few Cowboy fans we know –
      and I am curious as to what happened and why they allowed the “marriage” (as you so aptly worded it) – and
      as I type this – I saw an MGM ad and another Kevin Hart one (sitting poolside making it seem all fun).
      — Are they hurting for money and was this allowing ambling a rescue? Or did someone get hit in the head during the pandemic and then with a concussion and limited mental impairment decide that 2022 was a good time for the NFL to allow tons of gambling promotion.
      I didn’t watch the interview – but a recent guest on the Howard stern show said she was saturated with porn since she was 11 years old! sigh. And that was more than a decade ago – how much more is this exposure going to happen in this day when so many youngens have smart phones – and I see the gambling access as dangerous as the porn access.

        It came down to the same thing as it always does in these matters. Money, and more money. And even more money. All the sports leagues have gone gambling now and hey, it’s all fun and games until enough people lose everything. Or a player, coach or exec gets caught in a scandal involving throwing games or points.

  16. Splendid autumn leaves photos; street shots as good as usual. Any gambling adverts are dreadful things. What gets me most about them is the pseudo advice to gamble sensibly, e.g. set yourself a time limit. Who does that?

    1. Yes – the time limit did get mentioned in a few ads and most humans in our culture will wrestle with that (and more as you know from your decades of working with people) and the ads here have things like “ten dollars gets you started” or join free” and it is ad after ad after ad!

  18. You have captured some beautiful fall colors. I like the street art photos too. Did you notice the look on the guy’s face in the diner when the pretty girl walked by? Priceless! We just got a taste of cooler temperatures this week. It felt great. Not a fan of advertising potentially addictive habits of any kind. Shame on them.

  20. Fall is pretty there! I loved your name spelled out with the leaves!!

    You’d love He-Man and my kids they’re huge Steeler fans. He-Man was born and raised in Steller country. Me…I’m a fan of whatever team my kids/grandkids are playing on. I have always like the Dolphins though because they have good colors. I know next to nothing about the team! 😂

      And when I was growing up, the Dolphins were enemies with the Buffalo Bills – because of “Dan Effing Marino” and so “squish the fish” and an anti-dolphins mentality was everywhere. The first time my niece wore a Dolphins jersey – I was shocked because her dad was a huge Bills fan and it was the sign of changes and a new generation – hahahaha
      oh and last week someone noted how NICE the new Dolphins uniforms are – minor changes have been nice = and I agree – they have great colors for a team

My husband bought Bitcoin and lost his password. I’m glad he didn’t spend a huge sum of money on it. Hope you’re doing well. 🙂

      Thanks for your comment and I am glad you mentioned bitcoin because now that you bring it up I realize it is a gamble thing and interesting how your hubs lost the password – glad he didn’t lose a lot and I wonder how much his investment went up and down!
      I remember a pastor preaching about how his mood went up and down with his “stocks” and he had to address it because it sucked him in!

      1. How interesting that your pastor preach on stock, Yvette. He didn’t tell me how much he put in Bitcoin. It went viral for a while and even young people went crazy at it. We have two stock account but we’re very conservative. He watches then every day.

        1. Hi Miriam – my son almost bought bitcoin when he was a teen – and your comment reminded me that young and old have been into that bitcoin
          And the conservative stocks sound like they are less stressful!!

          And that pastor was from our church in the 1990s – where we lived for our first six years of marriage and a very special part of our foundation. And speaking of stocks and church people – over the years I have come to discover that the savvy ones are the Lutherans with “thrivent” financial!

          Anyhow – I hope the current economy doesn’t crash!!

        2. I watched the news a while ago about Bitcoin. It was scary, exciting, and stressful throughout the years. When it was at its peak, one person said he lost his password.

          The WSJ this morning says the fed tries to intervene the future interest rate increase. The interest rate was worse than 2008. The inflation is terrible. Let’s hope for the best.

Stunning fall images, Yvette…gambling is banned here and for that, I am happy although it goes too far sometimes as some people were prosecuted for setting up a bridge club…but it does ruin lives where it is prevalent and allowed so I would be against advertising off any sort..the Steelers fan with the stilettos reminded me of my daughter who loves heels and can run, skip and do anything in them me I prefer flats and comfort…

    1. Hi Carol – thanks for the nice comment and your daughter sounds like a few gals I know who seem to have a gift for wearing such shoes. I can wear a low (think and chunky) heel but that is all! I found what works for me and have some flats too (many good options and the flats you prefer are also likely better for your spine alignment too).

      And I didn’t know the gambling was so banned there — and I am not against gambling but this fall inundation has been over the top and still shaking my head-

          and not sure if you saw the video of a bus driver navigating sharp switch backs and someone said – “this is how they felt gambling” –
          here is the video – and it was modified to look dangerous – but the downward spiral did fit the gambling vibe

  24. I love the leaves and I always enjoy your street shots, Yvette. Of course, as a life-long Steelers fan, I have to agree with your assessment. As for the NFL rants, I’m not sure who decides what the announcers wear, but given that football is a family sport (I mean, I have pictures of our daughter in a Steelers onesie) I think it should dress should be appropriate for all ages. Gambling has always been with us, but I do NOT think the NFL should have invested in an online gambling. I think the sport should be neutral and avoid even the appearance of impropriety.

      Imagining your daughter in the onesie was fun! And it reminded me how the NFL can trickle into our family.
      My boys played little league football for one year and it was NOT the sport for us for many reasons – and one of them was all the power plays with the aggressive parents who wanted their hold to be the next Tom Brady or Gronk! Soccer and basketball were much better (lacrosse for a few years but also not for us)
      Anyhow – the NFL is not everyone’s “cup of tea” and I am not the most dedicated fan – I can leave the house for a yoga class when a game is at the two minute warning – hahaha – but because it is part of our culture – I do enjoy games, plays, upsets, etc
      And the recent gambling tsunami has been disappointing –

      1. Youth sports has gotten so far away from the Little League sports that I remember. We were lucky in that our daughter was never interested in sports.

        It’s sad, and I think your mention of aggressive parents is close to the mark. When I walk, I walk through a parking lot where a school bus driver parks for beginning his run. He was out one day (2021 when kids were still wearing masks). I asked him how things were going. He said “the kids are great, it’s the parents that drive me crazy.” Unfortunately, that could be a whole series of blog posts.

Hi – my boys did sports year round – fall soccer – winter basketball- and spring lacrosse or soccer – and we did that for about seven to eight years (or more) and then sometimes sports camps or regular camp – and the leagues we were in were mostly good – it truly was the little league football that was the worse –
          we had another team secretly record our practice one week and they knew all the plays that weekend – and the coaches never modified – what?

          And all of the parents were also coaches and usually those kind of coaches are neutral – but not on that team – they were so obviously trying to favor their child – and the obsessive behavior was worse with the quarterback position

          anyhow, the bus driver you met reminded me of this comic:

    Your leaves are lovely – stunning and vivid. Your steam and opinions are well thought out and vented. I would venture to say that most of your readers would agree with you. Certainly, the ones that comment do. I wonder how much women’s dress code or lack of it is encouraged by their bosses and therefore almost a uniform. Vince was wrongfully fired from a job in real estate and his boss actually said, “A good salesperson wears low-cut short dresses.” The man’s girlfriend got Vince’s job. Vince immediately went to work for a different company and made more money with better working conditions, but all I’m saying is that women may be trying to improve their position by using their sexuality. If they have female bosses, then I’m lost. Thanks for always giving us something to think about. 🙂

Hi Marsha – I hardly ever watch Fox News – but was over there this month a little and the women news anchors continue to wear those “Bright Pink” tops – and I wonder if that relates to management (not saying pink is not professional – because I once was doing career prep with students and a bright honors student told us “I know you all say navy is a power color and pink is not – but I am hoping to wear pink – and orange- and let my confidence and power carry me” well she said something like that and she had some serious confidence that will get her a long way…. with that said – it depends on the job – the tasks and the audience!
      And your example with Vince is good because it shows bias and preference!
      Not everyone wants a realtor with a shirt skirt! Hahaha

I love the leaf colors and everything that is Autumn and spent a ton of time taking photos this month – when I get to them will be anyone’s guess, but I kept thinking that weekend might be it for colorful leaves, warm days, etc. yet warm weather will return again next week, but sans leaves. They are all on the floor. Funny you put your name from piles of leaves arranged just so becaus I was on Twitter and the DNR had a post saying “get out and enjoy Fall and had made leaves into a heart” and I thought to myself I must do that sometime. I like your street shots as well – the two greyhounds getting acquainted was my favorite.

    I don’t watch any sports, so was not aware of the gambling ads, but yes – Amazon is making a ton of money, yes a little less than during the pandemic, so I guess that’s why they have raised the prices on items I’ve bought in the past – as in double or triple for peanuts and sunflower seeds. I used to just order them when I didn’t get out to drive to the store in the wintry weather. It’s ridiculous.

      But here in the city we have leaves still in trees and it has been enjoyable each day this week

      And guess what?
      The gambling ads seemed less this last weekend with the games
      I am not a huge fake watcher but football is often on where I am at!
      So I see the ads
      And then we did watch the Bills and Packers game last night – and wayyyyy less gambling ads – thank god!
      Perhaps it was because it was on NBC and maybe different channels have different ads?

      Also – the female announcers and reporters were dressed professional

      Well expect for the one main lady who just has to show cleavage – which I find unfitting and a double standard from what men can do!
      Anyhow – the prices going up for seeds and nuts will make it more costly for yoir beautiful outreach!

      1. I watch the news online every night before I come here – the female anchors do not seem to be dressed as professionally as they once were, maybe it is me though. I was watching a hearing for the Oxford High School shooter’s parents – same with the two female attorneys with the cleavage showing and too-casual look.

        Maybe there was some feedback and pushback about the gambling ads made the stations change?

        Everything is so expensive these days … I know I won’t make it to the Park everyday in Winter – I always try on weekends when I can go any time of the day. Once I’m retired, it will be the same way – going after it warms up and there is no ice. The price of seeds and nuts will hopefully not be the death knell for the many people who love to feed the backyard birds and squirrels. I have a following at the Park, so I’ll carry on as best I can, but sometimes Amazon just amazes me.

  29. Yvette, I love the leaves shape you made! Creative idea and execution.
    This year hasn’t been so scenic with the autumn leaves in our neck of the woods. Maybe it’s the heat and drought. I wouldn’t be surprised if we transitioned to leaves just falling off with some rain that’s in the forecast this week.
